Bring The Rain: Help Me Pick A Book!

  • cori_odom · 4 months ago
I am up for it! I love reading and have been looking for a book club!

Being totally selfish, I would vote for a book on becoming stronger in prayer or courage or anything like that as i have been tested very recently and am trying to manage all of it (with a 2 yr old and 9 month old!)

Thanks for providing this....hopefully i am not the only one with this need :)
  • facebook-1423032538 · 4 months ago
WOW, there are a lot of good books mentioned. Angie you may have a hard time deciding, I know I would. I am game for anything!!!! :) I haven't met a book I didn't like!!!! :)
  • laurawheatleysmith · 4 months ago
    Hey Angie,
Wow, I just might be your first comment - whohoo! Good timing. I think this book club is a completely great idea, because you have already recommended two books in your blog posts that I have fallen.in.love.with: Henri Nouwen's book about prayer, solitude, and silence (can't think of the name right now, but wow - what a fantastic, illuminating book) and the Children's Storybook Bible. I'm up for anything and it will be a delight to read along with you and fellow sisters in Christ. Regarding subject matter I vote for either prayer (Nouwen really amazed me with what I DON'T understand about the discipline of prayer) or parenting, since I am shepherding the hearts of three little ones here in Pittsburgh. Thanks Ang - you rock!

how about your book sweet angie ? lets all unfold your story together! UM really that sounds amazing . keep me posted whicjh book i'll buy it and will read it together. your like the cool ophera

A Woman/Wife/Mother After God's Own Heart (three seperate books) by Elizabeth George. All three of them are SO good.
  • shermo · 4 months ago
angie, great idea. i would love to join in with all these wonderful girls and be reading together. my two cents would be something that stretches us and makes us think. would love learning more about prayer, facing adversity, God working in the storm...wow, i am no help at all!! sorry.
  • mbooker · 4 months ago
General Christianity or prayer. I would say not parenting b/c all of us aren't parents. A lot of time, as a woman, I feel kind of left out. Yes, I am whining. :-) I am 34 years old, have been married for 11 years and have no children. This is by God's plan and mine. I often feel like there are SO many things out there for Christian Women who are mothers. But the selection is much fewer for those of us who have no kids.
So, my vote is for basically ANYTHING that doesn't have to do with parenting.

    Am I awful? :-)
  • angelac519 · 4 months ago
no! i so appreciate your thoughts!!!! i don't want anyone to feel left out :) thanks so much for letting me know...

Have you ever read or heard of Same Kind of Different as Me? It's written by Ron Hall and Dever Moore. It's a Christian-based real-life story on humanity. I really enjoyed the book, and it has encouraged me to stop making excuses and get involved to bring church to areas of my community that need to see the living Christ.
  • angelac519 · 4 months ago
one of my faves. we actually share the same book agent! it is AMAZING!!!
  • Rose · 4 months ago
General Christianity or any related topic sounds great. Parenting automatically excludes those of us who aren't...
  • bncampbell · 4 months ago
I would say general christianity or prayer as well. Some recommendations:
-Same Kind of Different As Me
    -Girl Meets God
    -Traveling Mercies

Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson :)

Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World by Joanna Weaver...amazing read!
  • jennosteen · 4 months ago
I've been wanting to read "Clinging: The Experience of Prayer" by Emily Griffin. I don't really know anything about this book, but our family is currently in a time of huge transition and unknown so prayer is definitely something I have been "clinging" to lately.
  • Jennifer · 4 months ago
I think we need to read The Shack togehter! but I will read whatever just so that I can read with "friends"! School starts next week. I am still bummed that I did not win the book but I guess I will get over that one at some point (tee hee!)
  • Amber · 4 months ago
I would love to learn how to pray more effectively. I'm not very good at and I seem to ask for an awful lot.
  • Kaitlin22 · 4 months ago
Same Kind of Different as Me is supposed to be fantastic. The best fiction/thought-provoking book that I've read in a really long time is Safely Home by Randy Alcorn.
  • BaronessBlack · 4 months ago

Since I'm not in the mommy stage yet, I'd love a book on growing deeper in my faith and finding satisfaction in Christ alone. I love this idea!!
  • Casey · 4 months ago
Always Enough by Heidi & Roland Baker. It's a must read that will increase everyone's faith just by reading it!!! It's very inspiring and I think you'd love it.

It made me laugh, cry, and not want to put it down. I read the whole thing in about two days & I don't consider myself a book lover.

    :)

What about Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World??
  • Christal · 4 months ago
I think a great read would be: Shame Off You by Alan Wright. Such a message about eliminating guilt and shame in your life in a culture that uses these things to make you feel so not worthy.
  • JenPearse · 4 months ago
"Redeeming Love" by Francene Rivers. Give this a read even if you don't choose it for your book club. I mourned the end of this book & I am not a reader. I was so sad that I wouldn't get to visit the families in this book daily. I couldn't & did not want to put it down. It is wonderful.

I would love to hear if you do in fact read it & what you think~

    Take care.

Not marriage or parenting (there go all my books!). I think everyone should be included.
Not Same Kind of Different As Me or Safely Home. (I've already read them. Loved them!)
Drawing a blank here... How about Crazy Love?
  • Leslie · 4 months ago
Parenting isn't really relatable to me right now. However, I'm reading an awesome book now called, The Jesus I Never Knew, by Phillip Yancey.
  • wendy595 · 4 months ago
Hmmm....I would love to do parenting BUT I don't want to exclude anyone...So how about prayer.
  • carolyngg · 4 months ago
Hey Angie, how about two different books... one about Christian parenting and another one that would appeal to everyone. Parenting in this day and age is so difficult with all of the secular influences. Mothers need to join together and stand for what is right. It's just a suggestion... two may be too much for you, though. Love your blog!!

Our favorites are Bruchko, Too Small to Ignore, and I will be starting No Greater Love (Maria Teresa) with my mom (she is in NC and I am in Ecuador)...a lot of people said that it was one of those life changing reads.
  • facebook-89100161 · 4 months ago
Ooooh! A book club! I'm up for anything, really...just let me know what book. :)

So you don't want to go to church anymore... I've heard is great ( I just started) and could promt some good discussion. Written by one of the authours of the shack which is also a very intresting read. Crazy Love also is good. There are so many good thought provoking books out there right now, you can't go wrong! Look forward to this!
  • mmmyatt · 4 months ago
i suggest "same kind of different as me"--totally life-changing book and i think it would support the values of your blog. also, "three cups of tea"--not from a believer's perspective but certainly thought-provoking and challenging...

Stepping Heavenward by Elizabeth E Prentice
  • twilabennett · 4 months ago
Angie, you must read Deeper by Debbie Alsdorf. An amazing book that takes you through Psalm 139--God knows me, protects me, made me and values me. I work for the publisher (true confession) but I've read your blog forever and know how much that Psalm means to you. Debbie could do a guest Q & A with your readers, she is a speaker and has an amazing story of God's love in her life. This book truly changed me. I led it in my small group a year ago and it had a major impact on every single woman there. I can send you a copy if you would like to take a look at it. I'm a friend of Jessica and Matt's, by the way!
  • monee2000 · 4 months ago
I'd vote for either Prayer (something I need a lot of help with) or General Christianity... I'm not a parent, so those books don't apply just yet! ;o)
  • Megan_HolditUptotheLight · 4 months ago
I've been wanting to read Captivating by John Eldredge....looks like an awesome one for this group in my humble opinion! Have you read it? It's not new, but everyone I run in to recommends it. I think God is trying to tell me something!

    Here's a link! http://www.lifewaystores.com/lwstore/product.as...

Via my best friend, I learned that "The Good Sheperd" is amazing. I haven't read it, but I trust my best! I'm reading "Battlefield of the Mind" by Joyce Meyer right now, which is interesting. Definitely a learning experience.

I bought "The Same Kind of Different as Me" but I haven't read it yet. From the other suggestions below, sounds like a great book!

One more suggestion... "What's so Amazing about Grace?" by Phillip Yancy.

    I promise I'm done. I like reading!

I would love to do this!! Great idea. I'm also not a mommy. I like the idea of Crazy Love, A Long Obedience in the Same Direction, Sacred Romance, or The Reflective Life. Just some ideas. Haven't read any of them but they've been on my list for awhile :)

how about a missionary biography, such as "A Chance to Die: The Life and Legacy of Amy Carmichael"...or there are many others, like Gladys Aylward, Bruchko, Prisoners of Hope (Dana Curry and Heather Mercer...etc

a fiction book i really liked was "Safely Home" by Randy Alcorn...the story of an American and his Chinese friend, suffering and persevering under persecution for the faith.
  • ReeseH · 4 months ago
Well. I am going to purchase Anne Jackson's "MaD Church Disease." I guess this might fit under "General Christianity.?.?" ..... or, "Come Be My Light; the Private Writings of the Saint of Calcutta," Mother Teresa.

I am not a parent either; but, I am still open for a book on parenting.... because, I hear it "takes a village." Just Sayin'

I loved reading all the ideas for books. I wrote quite a bit down!
I've read The Shack and that would be a good book for discussions.

A friend of mine read These is my Words: The diary of Sarah Agnes Prine. She said it was great and made me add it to my list. When she was reading it she was bringing it to work and could hardly put it down. She really enjoyed it!

This doesn't fit in any of the genre's you'd mentioned but I read "The boy in the striped pajamas" recently & it was soooooo good! It's young adult lit but wow, what a book!

I agree with everyone else that a prayer study would be great. Something that I need right now, would be on faith. We are doing a procedure this week to try to get pregnant...and after 3 years of heart break, I find it a hard line to be excited and pray for a miracle that I know God can do but also keep my heart guarded at the same time in case it doesnt work.

I've been dying to read "Lies Women Believe: And the Truth that Sets Them Free" by Nancy Leigh DeMoss, and I have no group to read it with! I think it falls under the "general Christianity" topic, and would be very relatable for people in a lot of different life circumstances :)
  • sweetandpetite92 · 4 months ago
I second Crazy Love by Francis Chan. I have never read it, but want to! What a better way to do it than with a wonderful group of ladies!

I'm currently reading Supper of the Lamb by Robert Farrar Capon. It is an excellent, witty, insightful read - even though it actually can be considered a cookbook. It may not be what the group wants, but I though I'd throw it out there. I'm having my students read it in my Art of Homemaking class.

Crossroads of Grace (series of three books) by Allison Pittman... a FABULOUS Christian author. Her blog is http://apittman-crossroads.blogspot.com/
This series is set in the 1800s... about three remarkable young women who experience the unthinkable... yet find Jesus.
The scripture on her main website says,
This is what the LORD says: 'Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls. (Jeremiah 16:6)

I am a sucker for good Christian Chick-lit. Kristen Billerbeck is my favorite- her spa girl series is wonderful and so funny. I would love to see us read something light-hearted and funny like that. It brings in the Christian/Spiritual element, but also is fun and easy to read and relate to. Just my 2 cents... Excited to see what happens though!!

I love memoirs, and I've been meaning to read Mother Theresa's "Come Be My Light." In the more Christian Living-type genre, "200 Pomegranates and an Audience of One" is all about serving God even when no one else notices or appreciates us. It's free on kindle, though I doubt many of us have a kindle!

I would love to do a book club! One book that I am reading now is "What Happens When Women say Yes to God." (by Lysa Terkeurst) This is a good beginner book, I think, and has a Bible study with it. Or, what about your book, "Experiencing the Depths of Christ"? I would love an excuse to read that book. I am also beginning the 90 Day Bible, but that might be a little much....can't wait!

One of my favorite books is The Red Tent, which is the story of Dinah (Jacob's daughter). I can't say that its entirely "biblically accurate" since there is not much detail of Dinah's story, but it's written based upon Jewish history. It's a great read. Another book is called Lost Women of the Bible. A program on a local Christian station has been discussing it - it's pretty interesting.

One of my all time favorite books is THE HEAVENLY MAN. It was given to me by my Campus Crusade for Christ mentor. She highly recommended it to me, and I would highly recommend it to everyone! The book is about the true story of Brother Yun, a house church leader in China. Along with being very encouraged by the account of how God is at work in another part of the world, this book greatly challenged my own faith and prayer life. He prayed for so many things that were far beyond human ability and logic - something that I often hesitate to do. I was so inspired by Brother Yun's passion and commitment as I read the book. Even during his suffering, he always emphasizes the character and beauty of Jesus. It's incredible! Most inspiring book I've ever read. Even if you don't use it for the book club, I would definitely recommend you give it a look!

If you decide to read a book about prayer, you should read "Prayer: Does It Make Any Difference?" by Philip Yancey. I just finished it, and it was incredible. Life changing!
  • Rachel Smith · 4 months ago
Okay, it's probably against the rule to reply to myself. But I thought I would give a bit more context about why this is the book on prayer that I would recommend. 1. Yancey is a GREAT, easy to read writer (as evidenced by his numerous books that others have recommended below!). 2. He asks all the tough questions that I've ever had about prayer, and tries to give as much info about them and insight into them as possible, while knowing that sometimes, there simply isn't an answer. 3. It is doctrinally, Biblically sound!

I like the idea of the Book of Negroes (bc I have heard that it is good)....but more importantly what about reading a general fiction/historical fiction, so that chrisitians and non-christians alike will be involved. The discussions that are derived from the reading can be God centred and perhaps will lead others to Him. :)

I just finished reading Firefly Lane by Kristin Hannah and it was fantastic. It is a long book, 479 pgs to be exact but you'll find yourself tangled up in the relationship between two best friends and their life over 30 years. It is a lot about women as best friends and motherhood. I laughed, cried, and feel stronger after reading this one.

I dont know if you would like them but I read all the Twilight series and will soon start reading "The Time Traveler's Wife" before I watch the movie.

I have no idea how you're going to pick! I have heard such good things about "Captivating" and have stated reading it several times, but can't quite seem to finish it. This might give me the kick in the pants I need to finish it. :)
But, whatever you choose, I'm in. I've been wanting to do something like this for awhile :)

The Mark of the Lion series is FANTASTIC - three of the best books I have ever read. Another good book to read and discuss is Lies Women Believe by Nancy Leigh DeMoss.

Hi Angie....when you were memorizing Psalm 139 on your blog, I suggested "Deeper: living in the Reality of God's love for you" by Debbie Alsdorf. It is a great book for women at different places in their faith and each chapter ends with study questions. Debbie shares the four core truth that can change the way we live our lives:
    He created me
    He knows me
    He values me
    He cares for me.

Her newest book is a follow up but could be done first and is called, "Wild: is your faith too tame?" It's the first Christian book to ever sport animal print on the cover so that's gotta count for something! It also has end of chapter questions AND a simple 6 to 8 question bible study included for each chapter at the end of the book. For about $10, it's a great value and again, fits those who are at different places spiritually. It's not hard to understand - the challenge is in the application and that is why I think it would be a good choice. Plus I'm leading it with my daytime bible study ladies and chapter 9 is about my cancer and faith story so I'm biased!

I've also heard RAVE reviews for Crazy Love.

    Angie,
My favorite General Christian book is "The Dream Giver" by Bruce Wilkinson. I think a book club sounds really fun. I heart books!!

A book on prayer would be much appreciated. Your blog has been such an encouragement to me since I found it.

I'm currently reading When People are Big and God is Small and LOVE it. It applies to pretty much everyone - dealing with our fear of man being higher than our fear of God. It deals with the issue of "self esteem", concern for what others think of us, hiding behind our 'masks' and the 'walls' we've built, etc.... and what's better, all from a strictly Biblical perspective.

I have not personally read this book yet, but heard amazing things about it. It's called Crazy Love - Overwhelmed by a Relentless God by Francis Chan. Here is the website to check it out. www.crazylovebook.com It's about falling deeply in love with God. Like I said, I have not read this book, but amazon.com gave it 4 1/2 stars and I have heard great things about it!! Love your blog, love your purity. I desire to to be a women after God's own heart!!

I'm reading Instruments in the Redeemer's Hands by Paul David Tripp, and it is fantastic! It's very deep, though, and filled with with information on how to minister to those we have relationships with. I have also gotten about halfway through From Clutter to Clarity by Nancy Twigg, which has really helped me pinpoint the areas of my life that I need to simplify.

What about...Lies Women Believe by Nancy Leigh DeMoss or if you think there are a good number of men readers who'd want to join in..."Sacred Romance" or "The Journey of Desire" by John Eldredge

I have noticed that a lot of people mention Francine Rivers and I wanted to add that her series Lineage of Grace is REMARKABLE. Each is historically and culturally-plausible fiction, woven in Rivers's captivating literary style: Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, Bathsheba, Mary (Jesus's mother).

The Shadow Women by Angela Hunt is also one of my favorite Biblical fiction books - The life of Moses through the eyes of three women: his sister, Egyptian adoptive mother, and wife. She is my favorite Christian fiction author, hands down.

For anyone who is unfamiliar with her, I highly recommend The Proposal (suspense), The Dept, The Note (on which a Hallmark movie was based), The Heirs of Cahira O'Connor series is brilliant, and her Legacies of the Ancient River series.

...sorry (well, at least a little) for the novel-length comment...

I LOVED the Lineage of Grace series! I was so sad to finish it; I wanted to read more! It taught me a lot on being a daughter, wife, mother, and child of God... Wonderful book.

So many good suggestions! This is great!

I'm SOOOO hoping you'll choose One Woman Against the Reich by Helmut Ziefle. The subtitle reads The True Story of a Mother's Struggle to Keep Her Family Faithful to God in a World Gone Mad. A Christian woman who raises her children to be obedient to and rely on God despite the hostilities of Nazi Germany. I could not put it down!

    Hi Angie!
I'm SO new to all this blogging. I don't even have any friends on my blog yet...don't know how to invite them in? But I see you're asking about books...yes, I HIGHLY recommend "Reckless Faith". It's by Beth Guckenberger. I love your site-

    God's best!
