Any Ideas?
Snicker, snicker.....
For what it's worth, I watched her running down that hill thinking she was going to trip and land face first into the tall grass!
Pray for a Red Sea Miracle for 8-year-old Connor!! (www.teamconnor.org) 34 days ago he was given 2-4 weeks to live!!
Loved this post, by the way - very real, very revealing (in a good way! lol). Thanks for making yourself so vulnerable to your readers, as always.
And my favorite Little House story is when Laura led Nellie into the creek for leeches to attach themselves :)
My two sisters and I were Mary, Laura and Carrie. It sucked being the youngest because Carrie never did anything special, which means I was stuck in a supporting role all the time. Ironically, in the end I turned out to be the actress in the family and I totally credit it to the stretch of skills I developed trying to imagine Carrie into an actual character worthy of imagination. My dog Mitzi made a fantastic Bandit, by the way. And I had short hair, so I would tie a blanket on my head to impersonate an authentic prairie girl. I didn't have the built in braids like you.
So, you basically just described my childhood, minus the whole living-in-a-foreign-country thing.
And I have to come to Todd's defense... I HATED the way the froze that ending. I didn't think she was demonic, but we always turned the channel before that move. Freaky.
I have no intentions of writing a book, but Riley has inspired me with a great title: "My Life is So Crazy My Dog is on Anti-Depressants"
That should about sum him up...
i know you aren't feeling great- i've been praying.
love, A
And thanks for the prayers... they are so appreciated at the moment. This funny post was actually just what I needed for a moment of distraction... you know, since Glee has failed me with no new episodes until the Fall...
By the way...did your Cabbage Patch doll have a really unique name? :)
And I too had Kirk Cameron photos in my room (maybe not on the walls) and was overjoyed when his mother once called to order some gift products from my parents. I HAD to be the one to answer that phone when Mrs. Cameron called to place the order!
I forgot about Rainbow Brite...I need me some rainbows around this house! Thanks for the fun memories :)
Ha, to this day when I throw that phrase out, people are like, "right, kindred spirits? Is that Biblical?" If they are not looking, I stick my tongue out at them like Nelly did so many times to the snot nosed boy (what was his name?) in Little House....and then I say, "Biblical? Oh no, I don't think so, but I am sure I heard it ten thousand times during my Anne of Green Gable days...
No one ever gets it. Seriously. Good times... Thanks for the stroll down memory lane. And the recollection of all the terrible hair do's thanks to punky bruster........ Remember the dopey hair irons that put kinks in your hair? Sure, we all sprayed the hair spray on and kinked our hair to near burnt stage. No one seemed to notice my hay wisping in the air to the sounds of Debbie Gibson as I roller-skated the night away with my friends.
Can you believe we made it?
Lighthearted is good and girl, living in Japan had to have been an experience and that picture is absolutely too adorable...... that picture holds more memories than you think. Never let go of that!!! Love ya!!!
Apparently they think a teacher wearing skirts and having glasses is archaic. ha!
I too was obsessed with Laura Ingalls. I thought that all would be right in my little world if I could just have a wardrobe that consisted of nothing but plaid dresses and calico bonnets.
I too can remember the day I "discovered" Anne and Diana. Oh, what joy! :-)
wow - that picture - wow.
That's all I got!
:) Lisa-Jo
Kirk Cameron was plastered all over my wall, too :)
http://decortoadore.blogspot.com/
She even has pics of herself dressed up like Laura!
Many Blessings, Misha
I often think that would be friends if I lived in Nashville and actually met you in person. After reading your post today, I am sure of it. Anne of Green Gables is my all time favorite book. My dear friend, Carrie, growing up and I played Anne and Diana even in 6th grade. We fought over who got to be Anne...we were bosom buddies. Your post today, resonated with me. Since my early years, I have found several others who are Anne enthusiasts. I only wish you could have had one when you were a kid.
We have decided to homeschool next year. Our oldest will be in first grade. I look forward to your sharing on this subject. As always, I love your posts. Thanks.
Kristen
Thanks so much for writing this blog, by the way. Although this is the first time I've posted a comment, I've been following you since the beginning....and I've learned so, so much from you. God bless.
Anyhoo.
I laughed out loud when you said you grew into your nose. Not because I think you haven't (I don't) *grin* but because I remember when somone who saw me after many, many years responded to my hello with "Jenny! Hi! You've grown into your teeth!"
Oh yes they did.
"And you're a boob," I did NOT say.
You want to know what else cracks me up? Your not so well written is how I talk. For realz. All the time. Can you imagine our conversations? XD
thank you to all you ladies who understand how freaky Laura was at the end of the credits! We're talking nightmares! I was 4 yrs old!
Pretty traumatic
Todd
I absolutely loved this post!! Little House was my favorite show growing up (and is still a fave today!!) Like yourself, growing up, I too always thought how cool it would be to live like Laura Ingalls and how simple and pleasant life must have been for them back then. Well, until I grew up and realized that it wasn't. Though oftentimes I find myself pining for simpler times - like Laura's childhood or the 80s! hehe
PS- Melissa Gilbert, Allison Arngrim (Nellie) and Patrick Labyorteaux (Andrew Garvey) are all on Twitter. You should check them out! :)

If this is any indication of what rambling, incoherent posts entail, I say, 'Keep 'em coming!".
Also, Kate looks just like you in that picture. And I think I had that dress (totally embarassed by that fact, btw) and the Cabbage Patch doll with the red hair and pigtails. AND, I fell asleep every night with Kirk Cameron smiling down at me from my ceiling. AND I wouldn't miss a Punky Brewster episode for anything; it came on every day at 4:00, just in time for me to get off the bus, have a snack, and get comfy. I'm telling you, this is weird.
p.s. not loving the new comment system... maybe I will once I get it figured out. :)
While I didn't dress like Laura, I wore a large straw hat to my 6th grade band concert and was made fun of for MONTHS afterwards! My mom convinced me that I looked nice and still swears to this day that it was cute. It wasn't bad, but not in style in the school circles!
I can also relate to loving and longing for the simplicity of the days of Laura and Anne. Still, to this day, I love that period. Have you seen the Hallmark series Love Comes Softly based on the books by Janette Oke? I love watching them. The beginning movies of the series are my favorite.
Except, my picture would be me dressed like Punky Brewster, because she was awesome!
Rainbow Brite was my alltime fave, we even played it on the playground. In Kindergarten, I made a boy named Rufus be the guy (Red Butler?).
And my best friend in middle school? Hollie was my KINDRED SPIRIT!
And somehow, I had completely forgotten all about Alf.
Thanks for that!
Emily

Loved this post, I LOVED little house on the prarie, Ann of Green Gables (but it was on Disney back when you had to pay extra for it so I didn't get to watch it much), and Punky Brewster. I always wonder why they don't show re-runs of Punky. Oh, and Alf...my mom LOVED that show, lol. we never missed an episode of it.
Oh and by the way...O wore my hair in 2 braids just the other day :)
My rag doll was also named Abigail.
And one of my "requirements" when we built our house was a porch swing. I use it every day!
Among other things, those are a few of the reasons I love this post.
PS- Are you sure that isn't Kate in the picture??
Thanks for that laugh =)
as for the books I was an avid reader too. Did you read the judy blume books: My favorite was are you there God, it's me Margret, Otherwise known as sheila the great, Blubber, or tales of a 4th grade nothing!
too many great memories...thank you! I've been struggling to remember the good from my childhood...so this post helped greatly!
Ps. Have to say that the pic of you looks so much like Kate!
I loved Small Wonder! I wanted that robot as a sister (only child here).
This is a precious post. Thank you for sharing the adorable picture of you.
I think I had that Cabbage Patch Kid with brown hair. :)
And, Alf is creepy.
And in that picture - I think your girls look a lot like you - especially Kate. SO fun!!!!!!
You'd have made a great Pippi Longstocking, too!
For a family vacation about 16 years ago, went to Minn. and went to Walnut Grove and Sleepy Hollow.
Thanks for sharing the picture
And that picture of you looks so much like your sweet Kate! I think it's the eyes.
I remember Alf, Punky Brewster (in fact, my nickname in middle school was in fact Punky!), and the like... and am secretly jealous that you met Candace Cameron, a.k.a DJ TANNER!!! Can't forget Full House!
Praying for your progress on your book... I know that the Lord will be doing a mighty work.
Praying that all is going well with your book, too!
I still longed for that simple life for a very long time, until I realized that God had placed me in this time era so that modern medicines could help me have children. One hundred or more years ago, that would not have happened.
I do believe that God wants us to live our lives much as they did by focusing on Him, our families, our friends, and then our jobs/obligations, etc. So many times we get it turned around. So, here's to the life Laura showed us how to live, may we live it to God's glory!
I love this "other side" of you, the random, funny and witty writing style is a lot of fun too. I think you could write anything, from the greatest novel to the back of cereal boxes, and we'd be mesmerized.
I did not like Little House. (I KNOW.) I think it is because of two things though - one, my mom made me watch it when it came on TV, because she loved it. And two - I just really did not like how mean Nellie was! It made me feel so bad, because I was the kid who got picked on...
However, I watched it as an adult (the episode where Laura takes the teacher exam, and she and Nellie get in the fight by the lake...) and liked it. So I need to find some DVDs somewhere.
So fun! I don't recall the braid across the face. But I think it was more that I was afraid they were going to trip running downhill that fast!
Thank you for sharing a memory of your childhood! Its great to see how the past helps influence the future (home-schooling, I mean) :).
Love from Michigan ~
Laura
Be blessed,
Stacey : )
Oh, when I first saw the picture that you posted of yourself when you were younger, I thought it was Kate!!
and, by the way, we STILL watch little house on the prairie reruns....my husband love laura ingalls :-)
I never got into the Little House show too much, but I devoured the books over & over. The shows were just too sappy for me - even Nellie was tiresome. I mean, who has a mother who never raises her voice, even when the crops fail & they're living on wheat? Oh, wait, that was in the books, not the show.
Anyway, you write whatever your randomness produces, & we will still devour the words.
And, Kate's a total clone of you!
And that episode of Punky Brewster - YES! I never looked at a milk carton the same way after that one.
SO, this post is all over the place and I used the word "love" in it more than I have in the past month, but I wanted you to know that this post made my heart smile and brought back some excellent memories of my childhood.
It was an enjoyable post. And I am sure many enjoyed.
Mind you, I think once the first signs of winter would arrive, I wouldn't feel so adventurous and I would wonder where all my modern day amenities to keep me warm were. I don't think mama could make me a pair of uggs!
BTW, I had that same exact cabbage patch doll. I'm not a look-alike like you are, though. :) It was just the only one my parents could get me because at that time those darn cabbage patch dolls were flying off the shelves. I was lucky to get one at all and that my parents weren't injured in the process of getting it for me! :) I'm looking forward to your "homeschool" posts!
The photo you chose reminds me of childhood innocence that today you just don't see at 10 years old... I also can see how your girls resemble you. :) Remember too, friend that we are in His image... we all think of ourselves as geeky, awkward children at some point in our lives but to Him, we are beautiful flowers.
Can't wait till the Homeschool post.
From one HS mom to another ;)
Blessings,
Jhona
Thank you so much for the blast into the past.
Blessings and Prayers-
Elizabeth
My boys watched Little House for the first time on Saturday and they were mesmerized. So AWESOME!
Have you ever read/seen Christy by Catherine Marshall? It is by far my favorite book of all time! It has had such a strong influence on my life.
I was also that little girl who had an unhealthy love of books, who pretended I lived in the big woods, or on the prairie or on the banks of plum creek. I was also homeschooled, and I never felt like I was weird, or I was odd... because my Mom nurtured those hopes and dreams. I never had pencils thrown at my head, and I grew up with such a deep understanding and love of Christ, that I really have no option but to home school my children. Why thrust them into a world of sin and unhappiness, when I can provide a much safer, much happier world in a calm, safe environment? It's not being over protective... it's simply allowing them to stay a child for as long as possible.
I look forward to reading your post on home schooling.
And you're right. Alf has NOTHING on Laura!
And I had those moments, too, where I wished I lived in the Little House days- walking to the one room schoolhouse, doing homework by candlelight as pa played the fiddle. Sometimes I still wish I lived during that time. Life was much simpler then.
I also have to mention that the first thing I noticed when I saw your picture was not your crooked bangs or your dress. I was struck by how much Kate looks like you! Wow Angie! You have a little mini me!
Can we please be IRL friends? I adore you.
And yes, Alf was horribly creepy.
Thanks for the walk down memory lane.
Anne of Green Gables. I can't wait until my girls are old enough to watch... again, ADORED the series.
Thank you for the memories!
Oh, and I'm sure you've heard this comment already, but I can't keep myself from saying it anyway... The picture of you with the pigtails? SO looks like Kate! I know, I know... you aren't so fond of the picture! But I mean it as a compliment! I always thought she looked like you, but seeing a pic of you in your childhood confirmed it! You're both beautiful, no matter if you chop your bangs or whatever! (I did the same - 6th grade, the night before school pictures. Call me Spike. The braided ribbon barrettes with pretty beads at the ends did nothing to distract from that mistake, either! I should have worn my bonnet!) ;)
Praying for you as you work on your book!
PS. Kirk Cameron - still totally hot!
i also wanted to tell you that i have decided to homeschool this year. i'm rather terrified of it but feel God is telling me to do it so i must follow. but i like you am doing it becuase the world around me feels like it is falling into this downward spiral and i want some sense of simplicity in it. erin
Pray you and your family are doing well and pray for you as you write.
Blessings today and always,
Kaye

BTW, this is my first time to comment on your blog. You are very encouraging to me. And Selah is one of my favorite Christian groups. And actually I had been reading the blog for a while before I knew Todd was your husband. I know, I know, it takes me a while sometimes....
And for the record, the smell of old books is still a favorite :)
tread carefully, wilson.
btw, i had the greatest time at the pool today, and as if you didn't already know, you have the best wife on the planet :)
love to you all,
a
I dream of being as pretty as Laura's big sister, I always thought she was gorgeous, her blond hair (every brown hair's dream is to be blond, specially when you grow up in a country where there was hardly anyone blond ... ha ha ha).
You had brought up wonderful memories of my childhood.
Thank you!!
We lived in Italy and I do not recall the green button. I DO remember VCR tapes being sent by family.
To this day, my heart skips a beat when I hear the first few notes of that music...("Little House")
Thanks for bringing us laughter and memories of our childhood in this post!
P.S- That picture of you looks so much like your little Kate!
I will say this about the picture...I could never really figure out who Kate looked like but no I see that is you as a child. Both equally adorable! (Despite you wearing that dress!)
And I have secretly wished for a bosom friend my whole life, but alas, it never happened. Sigh.
I love Anne and Diana and Laura and Nellie and Mary and all of them!!!!
Love,
Cathy
Teresa
My son (who is now in heaven) and I used to watch Little House in the daytime when we were supposed to be home-schooling --- I did not home-school because I wanted to be Miss Beadle, but more because he was more the Oleson boy than any of Laura's beaus or bros.
My eldest daughter has a love for literature. She was introduced to Anne of Green Gables in the 3rd grade by Mrs. Brown (her teacher). Mrs. Brown promised her that she would loan Brittany all the Anne movies to watch at home if she would only read all the books. So as Brittany read each book in the series she brought a movie home to watch. She read them all in her third grade year. I'm still quite proud of her. She is now in college studying to be a writer. HMMMM.
Must I say that it was so delightful to discover that PBS regularly airs the Anne of Green Gables and Anne of Avonlea series on the occasional Sunday afternoon here in Texas. Oh The Joy!
I wanted to be either a 50s SAHM like June Cleaver or a Gibson Girl from the turn of the century or so... I wanted to play parlor games and be courted and all that romantic stuff including where a Peach Organza dress with a ruffle and a bustle to a dance while I played coy with the boys. OH I WAS BORN IN THE WRONG ERA as well... But Acts 17:26 suggests to me that I may be wrong about that anywhooooo. Thanks for sharing and Blessings all around.
How you can love someone so much that you never have met? It is God that makes us kindred sisters in Christ.
I wore "prairie skirts", I actually in the US dressed up as Laura Ingalls in..........high school! I loved bonnets, boots and puffed sleeves. Anne and Laura were my heros. It does add to my want to homeschool. Did you know about Prairie primer? a total curriculum based on the Little House books. We have been reading Little House this year and I have been dvr'ing all the shows for my kids to watch.
Your friend, Julie in CA
PS I met my old friend when she stood at the bus stop in Jr high reading a Anne book. I was told she was a nerd and not to be her friend. I learned never to listen to that and we are still friends to this day.
I, too, dressed up as her for Halloween.
I, too, had pencils, paper wads and you name it thrown at me.
Do you think it is a coincidence? Hmmmm....
In all of my years of faithfully watching Little House on the Prairie as a child, I never quite understood why I remember having such an aversion to the episode with the clown. In fact, last week I was talking with a friend and this topic came up and she remembered specifics, while I only remembered the scared feeling the episode gave me. As she recounted what the episode was about, I found my adult self surprised that Little House tackled such a topic.
Apparently, in my little world, I wanted Nellie (and later Nancy) to be as bad as it got.
I so enjoy this blog. Even though you said this post was going to be "rambling", it doesn't matter to me WHAT you post, it's all good ; )
Next time I'm at a Selah concert (seriously, they need to come to Minnesota more often!) I will stand around as long as it takes to ask Todd about Laura! :)
I don't know what you are writing but I am sure it will be good!
The picture...I have many of me that I would NEVER share on my blog!! Let's just say BIG PINK PLASTIC framed glasses!! UGH...the horror!
And I'm going to have to agree with your husband on this one, the ending was always weird to me. It stopped and like Laura's braid went across her eyebrow and made a funny mark on her face for the final freeze frame.
Thanks for the trip down memory lane! Your random posts are my favorite!
I think Selah is coming to NY in the fall, I'll have to make a note somewhere to ask Todd about his fear of Laura!
I not only remember Alf and Small Wonder, but I also now own all four seasons of Punky Brewster on DVD. I'm pretty sure that show is why I decided I wanted to be a foster parent as such a young age. ;) And although I (just between you and me) actually bought them for myself (under the guise of buying them for the kids), we've had several 7-9 year olds in our home who have fallen in love with Punky - they relate to her because they are in similar situations. I didn't plan it, but Punky has proven to be a really fantastic as a conversation starter for some of the more serious topics.
I agree about the simpler life. I was a reader and a HUGE fan of Anne of Green Gables (still am). I can't count how many times I've both watched the movies and read all of the books. If given the opportunity, I would have uprooted my family from the 1980s and dropped us all on Anne's doorstep! I still wish I could - more than ever, in fact.
Reading this post was especially fun for me to read, since I was around during many of your vividly described 6th grade comments.
I totally remember the whole thing about "the Lift"... Looking back, it's hard to believe that a girl named Lisa something and I started that.... since I was so scrawny and underweight., I was the guinea pig to be lifted up. I never knew you thought that was the "cool kids" and that you were banned! And, I also so remember Katie N. too!! I kind of remember you guys were friends for awhile there in 6th grade, and then you and I started our BFF friendship right at the end of that year... which was followed by a summer spent at Kings Island in our coordinated neon-colored ESPRIT tops and shorts...looking sweet! (at least we thought we did)... ha ha ha! Good times.
Well, as much as I'm sure the transition into Cincinnati was awkward (yes, I remember the dress in the yearbook photo), I think you found your place pretty quickly after that. I'm glad that I was a part of your life those years! Glad that I can hear about how you are doing through your blog. :)
Take care,
Stephanie
are you headed to nashville anytime??? miss you, and much love, A
My bro lived in Japan when I was about 10 years old and after he came back a few girls would come stay with us so they could experience the states for themselves. It was always interesting that they were just a little behind the times. They so wanted to be just like the kids in the states. I would have traded places with any one of them.
I also grew up with those shows and wanted to climb into their worlds. Now I would just love to live in a place as beautiful as the places in Anne of Green Gables. I also loved her beloved Matthew and cried my eyes out in the episode where he died.
Oh! And if you havn't seen the series "Tales of *Avonlee" *sp You should!!! It was my favorite growing up. It still has all the good characters like Matilda and Rachel and some fun new ones... You would adore it!

I too loved Anne & Laura. I think that we would be bosom friends if we lived close to each other. I guess blogging friends will have to do for now. :)
I must say I completely enjoy the rambling goofy Angie. And I won't tell you that you were cute when you were little, cuz you don't want to hear it, but I will tell you that I also have several pictures of me in braids and holding my Cabbage Patch doll. :)
We just may be Kindred Spirits!
We may want until September for my little Nashville visit since you are a little busy right now?? Thoughts?!
Blessings~Megan

I so remember the one where Candace Cameron (whose brother I thought I was definitly going to marry) was on the milk carton, but my favorite episode was the one where they all squeezed balloons to try to make their, ahem, bosoms bigger :) I plead the fifth on whether or not I ever tried it.
Secondly, Little House & Anne were all the way at the top of my fav list. I would love to live like that. Definitly in need of a front porch swing and the only fear of life to be someone pulling my pigtails.
Can't wait for your homeschooling post. :)
I suppose I am a lurker.
OMW, I sooooo loved Little House on the Prairie! Still do actually, if I'm flipping channels and it's on I will stop to see which episode it is.
I grew up (and still do) wanting horses, and loved the ones with Bunny, until Pa had to shoot her, I cried so hard, also when she found Tiger dead in the barn. I keep telling DH that we need to get the DVD set! I used to like watching and would laugh EVERY time at the opening scene when they all ran down the hill, and Carrie fell!
My mom made my sister and me Easter dresses one year, probably around 1975/76, and they were long dresses, with bonnets just like on the show, I LOVED that easter dress! I need to get a new scanner so I can copy a bunch of my old pictures to post. Funny stuff!
OH, did you know that Laura Ingalls Wilder also wrote a poetry book about Fairies? I bought a used one from Amazon.com, it's really cute, and the poems are really good!
thanks for the flashbacks and the giggles!

Today was one of those days and this post gave me an honest smile and a good laugh. You can ramble about Anne and Laura any day. I'm also so glad that Audra is your Diana.
I feel like watching Green Gables right now.
Thank you!
I know everyone says the world is a small place, I guess I just didn't think it was so small. The other day I was looking at a comment a friend of mine made on someone's Facebook picture. It said something like oh the last time I saw Todd it was when we had sleep overs together. It took me a minute to connect the dots but my friend knows your husband, she was in Africa while he was (she was also an MK).
Oh, and since I see you are homeschooling, I have some Montessori activities for young kids on one of my blogs, http://momtessori.blogspot.com . I used to be a Montessori teacher for 3-6 year olds before I had kids. There might be something there you could use . . .
My second daughter is named Laura, in part because I have such fond associations with the name. My girls also enjoy Anne of Green Gables. Did you know that Focus on the Family offers it in an audio book/drama format? We got a set with Anne, The Secret Garden and Little Women and have enjoyed all three. Your twins might enjoy the first two, although Little Women is probably better for an older child (only my eleven year old has listened to that one). My six year old (Laura) will listen to The Secret Garden and Anne of Green Gables over and over. I actually like the book and the movie of Anne better, but she loves the CD.
I also enjoy reading your blog, profound or random!
Deborah
Deborah, again
First of all, I totally LOVED "Small Wonders", except I always felt bad that Vicky had to sleep in the closet, even if she was a robot.
Second, I DO remember that episode of Spunky Brewster!! Do you remember the one where they were playing hide-and-go seek and the child hid in the old refrigerator and got stuck??? Man, they dealt with some serious issues, didn't they?!
Third, I TOTALLY used sticker earrings for years too. Man we were cool.
And lastly, I just adore you Angie, I adore your honesty and humility. I am reading a book called "Mudhouse Sabbath" right now and it's written by a woman who was brought up Jewish and converted to Christianity as an adult - it's a great book that just smells terrific by the way =) - and she talks about several Jewish "traditions' she misses. One of them is hospitality, and she paints with a broad brush what all hospitality really entails...including letting people IN to your LIFE, and really being transparent with them.
You are one of the most hospitable people I know Angie, and you are a wonderful example for me.
Blessings,
kendra =)
And I love Little House too - Almanzo was my first 'crush'. :) But now I won't be able to watch re-runs and the end credits without thinking of poor possessed Laura! :)
Todd's "fear" of that scene cracked me up - because all though I never thought of it the way he did, I remember what he is talking about!
And yes - you look SO much like Kate!!
Except, of course, you turned out much cooler as an adult. :)
I can't wait to read about your homeschooling decision and experience--I'm starting this fall with Kindergarten for our oldest.
Funny thing--after reading this post yesterday, Candace Cameron was in my dream last night. The night before that, MckMama was in my dream. I think I'm reading too many blogs! :0)
Thanks for the look back and laughing at myself.
Marie , Rancho Cucamonga, CA.
I bought my best friend a dust bonnet from Walnut Grove! I also have pictures but I don't know how to share them.
And my Cabbage Patch Kid, Godfrey Mark, could be your doll's twin.
I found out Selah is coming to McBain, MI in October. It's a 2 hour drive but my friend Leah and I are hoping to go (it's a school night, too!) Any chance you'll be there??
It's fun to see how other Third Culture Kids cope/d in your blog and in comments - it is so much fun sharing when we have similar experiences. I have loved your blogs as you write so i/we can relate whether we have similar expereinces or not! Love the picture!
I was terrified of ALF... he was just, well, creepy! I felt like he would reach through the tube and EAT me! ALF and Gremlins... ::shudder::: I am homeschooling my oldest 2 girls, and guess what... THEY LOVE LITTLE HOUSE and ANNE OF GREEN GABLES TOO! (they also love The Secret Garden, and Pippi too but Little House is their passion) There are countless hours spent playing Laura and Mary... we own ALL the seasons on DVD and have seen them all, several times! There are giggles, tears, and anger- gosh that Mrs. Olsen is so nasty! And that Nellie, argh, Nellie! [But boy didn't she have it comin to her when Percy dumped the eggs on her head!] Haha...
All this to say, I loved your post, we have so much in common, and at the same time nothing in common... how is that even possible? There are moments where you take the words out of my mouth, and others, I'm left crying and praying over you and your family...
Thank you for your blog!
From another Sister in Christ,
I loved strolling down memory lane as you listed all the old shows...I too was a HUGE LHOTP fan...we have even gotten our kids into watching the DVD's. :o) Good times.
I also suffered the emotional trauma of having been born in the wrong century and being the social outcast struggling to fit in. Yes, I was the brunt of LOTS of mean-spirited practical jokes at school.
No, it was NOT a good idea for me to wear my red bonnet for picture day in the fifth grade in a new school.
Yes, I was a goody girl.
No, my husband is NOT a fan of Laura. "Ingallites", he calls those of us who love her. In a pat-you-on-the-head, "you'll be OK" tone of voice.
I like Anne, too, except being a little older than you, I didn't meet her in video until after I was married. I had read all her books, though. Oh, and I did notice the resemblence in hair color, but that's an envious observation. I love red hair. After birthing ten children, I still pray for the red-headed, curly haired, blue-eyed twin girls I haven't had yet! Red hair runs in my hubby's family, but all we've passed on so far are the blond genes from my family.
Thanks for the walk down memory lane!
Edited to add: Books were/are my life. That's why we started using Sonlight curriculum for home school. I was more at home in the library or the book shop than in the playground.
The first day of first grade the bus came to pick me up and there was a girl sitting in a seat who looked identical to Laura Ingalls and I was convinced that she was!! Please remember this is a first graders mind! "Laura" was in my class too! I came home that day and running into the house shouting to my mom that Lauran Ingalls was in my class! I truly believed it!! Turns out me and "Laura" who is really Amy went all 12 years together through school and now 15 years out of high school she teaches three of my kids piano!!! Great memories!
All through high school on days we did not have classes we would always pop in the video for Anne of Green Gables! Me and the girls would always dream of our "Gilbert"! Now we are all married and we have found out "Gilberts"!
I homeschool too and my oldest daughter dressed up as Lauran Ingalls three years ago! I still sometimes catch myself daydreaming and remembering my days of imagination playing "Little House" I wish that for my children too!
And, my best friend and I were obsessed with Anne of Green Gables. We were even worse though- we actually called each other "bosom buddies". In 6th grade. No joke, I still have all our letters that we would send each other, and on each one is "Bosom Buddy, 2340 Whatever Street....."you get the point=) Now that I look back, I'm horrified, but I'm pretty sure that when my bosom buddy got married she even put it in her description of me in her wedding program.=) Hope everything is going well in your family!
Thanks for the laugh, thanks for the walk down memory lane and for sharing your memories and your fun. Thanks for being real.
You know what else, Angie? You never are "not well written"- this stuff is awesome too, even if you think it's less.
With lots of love in Him,
Rebekah :)
Anne and Laura were two of my favorites too. I think it's 'cause I could relate to their impulsivity. I can so see myself smashing that slate over Gilbert's head when he calls Anne "Carrots". Oops.
And here in Brazil, we have lots of current American TV, but my kids love their Little House dvds. Timeless.
And loving the smell of books is not unhealthy. It's smart. :)
reading this post is like reliving my childhood! ha ha ha!
i can't believe you can remember specific episodes of these shows.
candace cameron as the runaway on punky. totally remember it! i love it!
and small wonder? seriously? that was a strange show.
wasn't her name vicki or something like that?
thanks for the memories... i'm sure we could have been nerds together back in the 80's! ;)
I am so looking forward to reading about what led you to homeschool your girls. I've been homeschooling my twins for a little over four years now and it's been an amazing gift for our family. I've just started a blog about our homeschool journey and I would be SO humbled if you would check it out sometime. It's at www.hsdiva.com. I have to tell you that your blog was the first one I ever read and you have been a great inspiration for me as I embark on my own blog journey.
All the best!

...thanks for the trip down memory lane. I too loved Anne and Laura!
As I prepare to head to a family wedding tonight, your comments about the good ol days made me laugh. I was accepted by most everyone but didn't come from the right family (meaning wealthy) and each time I come home I try to make sure I'm wearing my cutest outfits, have my eyebrows tweezed just right, and have my wedding ring polished. Why are we like that? Why am I like that? Why do we choose the picture that we look best in and hide the rest? My husband reminds me that he loves me for me. And more important than that, God loves me for me too whether I look cute or not. Thanks for being you - lovely bangs and all!
Those episodes are from Season 2 (I think) and we just finished watching them. I watch LHOTP more than anything else. Even worse, I've gotten my boys hooked on it - my 12 year old even bugs me to stop working and watch it with him. And, for those of you who might want to label him in a not so masculine way, that's not the case. He just really enjoys the show - my boys are all boy. Oh, I love, love, love LHOTP. I used to have a thing for Nellie's hair and one time at summer camp I convinced everyone to call me Nellie. For the whole 2 weeks I had everyone calling me Nellie. She's a nasty, brat of a girl but I really loved those curls. Anyhow, I love Laura and the gang and I think your picture is super cute. I really do. I was a goofy kid too, I suspect. Oh, and I LOVED rainbow brite and Punky Brewster - deep, colorful love for those girls.
Gotta go get some sleep now...
p.s. Todd, that wasn't nice.
I love Dave Crowder band, it piped in right now as I was typing... it beings me to tears every time!
My question to you is this... what curriculum do you use? I started homeschooling last year, this was not something I felt called to, but my children were literally crying out for it, so i began the journey with an 8th grader and a kindergardener who actually completed first grade this year. We used the missouri virtual intruction program, but i want to customize a bit more. Especially for the boy going into second grade at barely 6 years old. The 9th grader too. There is so much out there to pick from, what do you suggest, use, love to teach??!!

the musical is coming in October ......starring Melissa Gilbert herself ;-)
Something else that happened this week that made me feel my age was when we were in southern Indiana and close to running out of gas. We had to find the nearest gas station, which was right out of Andy Griffith---I promise you! As my husband was pumping gas, my son exclaims, "COOL! Check out the way those numbers on the pump are spinning"!
Since when are things from my childhood nostalgic? (sigh)
Also, Little House is still a personal favorite of mine. That Nelly never quite got the come-uppance I felt she deserved, but she came close. Do you remember the episode with Percival when she was making fun of him being short? One of my top ten tv moments ever:)
I'm sorry I'm acting like I know you and I've never even posted before! I've been reading forever, but never de-lurked. By way of introduction, I'm Kristen, I'm 31 and I live in Indianapolis. I have 6 yo twins (a boy and a girl), and I love this blog. That picture of you could've been me except I had on huge gray-tinted glasses (my parents thought that would help reduce the fluorescent glare of classroom lights) and I'm black.
BTW, that bit about Todd's phobia had me in tears because I know the exact moment he's talking about - priceless! I needed a laugh today:) Thanks so much for your words and for sharing your gift with all of us Sundays!
you probably cant possibly read all these comments...i'm #288...good governor!!
ps. my fav is when caroline makes 2 blue dresses for mary & laura instead of for herself...precious! (oh, yeah...the part that freaks todd out with the credits, also has the same effect on my friends hubby...he used the same words to describe..unreal!
You are so funny - I look forward to more not so well-written posts!
Thank you for your blog...it inspires me to be the person God created me to be!
I still love the old Little House re-runs. My sister and I used my Holly Hobby cradle for Baby Carrie's bed. We would put the cradle on my big double bed, with my Prayer Patty doll in it as Carrie, wear our best long frilly pajamas, kerchiefs on our heads for bonnets and pretend we were in the wagon going...who knows where? To town? To Kansas? We had the best time!
I loved the TV series, but have to say I enjoyed the books more. I learned to read at the age of 4 because my older sister and Grandma were reading the books together (they'd trade) and talked for hours about the books. I was flat out jealous and taught myself to read as a result.
If it was not for the Anne of Green Gable book series, I don't know if I would have survived some of my schooling. I was in a Christian school, with less than Christian classmates. As a fellow lover of the smell of books, this did not help my social standing. Thankfully, Anne got me through one tough year.
Every spare penny I could manage (and a lot of begging for pennies from parents and grandparents) went to those Scholastic book fairs. My absolute favorite book fair was the year we didn't have to order the books, but the books were already there for the purchasing...not sure how that happened, but I was a very, very happy girl!
After Anne was finished, I moved on to rather dysfunctional family "tween" books about sick parents, eating disorders, kids with cancer...Can you top that?
I was talking to my dear friend, Adrienne, today. I don't get to listen to her show live because I work on Thursdays...but she was telling me about your being a guest yesterday. I need to take some time to listen to it. Adrienne said she was bawling at one point...pretty sure she wasn't the only one!!
My little Griffin died at 20 weeks during premature labor. I remember when he finally made his way out, asking, "is he alive?". He wasn't, not here on Earth anyway. Can't wait to meet that boy.
PS I can totally see why Todd finds her field dance a little demonic. It's a little, um, children of the corn...or something. But still, who doesn't LOVE Little House?!
And I had some clothes kind of like that too and I grew up in the U.S. :) Kelly
PS - Um . . . I still want to be Laura Ingalls! And I just this summer re-read the entire AGG series and wept! (No, I am not ashamed.) And that also confirmed the desire my family has to adopt . . .but that one is for another day! :o)
On a much more serious note, thank you once again for your ministry here and that of supporting your husband. Selah's music has been such a blessing to me! I sat tonight with tears streaming down my face as they sang "Unredeemed" here in OH. I know that his travels and ministry come at a price to your family the days you are apart, so thank you. My sister and I spoke to him after the concert to express my thanks in person, and now that I think about it, maybe I freaked him out a little when I said my name was Laura! Good thing I no longer have the long braids!
God bless you!
This was such a walk down memory lane. I loved Punky Brewster and Rainbow Brite.*sigh*
Oh and I didn't realize we were about the same age. I was 9 in 1986, the year of the weird Halloween lol :)
Cheryl
