  • CJmomof4 · 6 months ago
Ha Ha Ha Ha!! I think Todd might just be right.....I had never noticed that before.....as a kid I didn't stick around to watch the credits....I was already off pretending I WAS Laura.
  • JD_Ladybugs999 · 6 months ago
I had never watched this show (perhaps they didn't have it in French back then, not sure), so I hadn't seen the ending Todd was referring to.... thanks for sharing that! It is a little freaky!!

For what it's worth, I watched her running down that hill thinking she was going to trip and land face first into the tall grass!
  • Karen · 6 months ago
Okay, I didn't even know what everyone had been talking about with the credits. It's not bad!!Four or not, Todd , you were a bit of a wuss back in the day. :)

Pray for a Red Sea Miracle for 8-year-old Connor!! (www.teamconnor.org) 34 days ago he was given 2-4 weeks to live!!

Haha! I LOVED this post!! You're so cool Angie...I don't care what you say :)
  • facebook-73800389 · 6 months ago
Just trying out the new facebook thingy...kinda cool :)
  • Liz · 6 months ago
Ok...have to ask....is Ashleigh your sister, Angie? You look a lot alike!
  • ashleighsmith · 6 months ago
Oh, Liz...you just made my year!! No, we are not sisters, but thank you for the wonderful compliment!!!
  • Andrea Lisk · 6 months ago
Oh Angie... how you make me laugh. I am also Anne, to my BOSOM friend Kim's Diana = ) I'm also thankful that many awkward pictures have a way of getting buried!

What always struck me about the Little House shows was that Carrie was always - ALWAYS - running to the outhouse. Seriously. Check it out. She doesn't get many lines, but she gets several action scenes...unfortunately, the action typically consists of an apparent potty emergency.

Loved this post, by the way - very real, very revealing (in a good way! lol). Thanks for making yourself so vulnerable to your readers, as always.
  • Tamara · 6 months ago
I love Little House, too, and DVR it every afternoon on Hallmark. But, the books are even better. I love, love, love them. They are the reason I became a writer.
  • Magda · 6 months ago
Small Wonder!!!!! I completely forgot about that show! LOVED it.

And my favorite Little House story is when Laura led Nellie into the creek for leeches to attach themselves :)
  • Doni@jimanddoni.com · 6 months ago
You are indeed a kindred spirit. ;)
  • gitzengirl · 6 months ago
I have never felt closer to you than I do at this moment.

My two sisters and I were Mary, Laura and Carrie. It sucked being the youngest because Carrie never did anything special, which means I was stuck in a supporting role all the time. Ironically, in the end I turned out to be the actress in the family and I totally credit it to the stretch of skills I developed trying to imagine Carrie into an actual character worthy of imagination. My dog Mitzi made a fantastic Bandit, by the way. And I had short hair, so I would tie a blanket on my head to impersonate an authentic prairie girl. I didn't have the built in braids like you.

So, you basically just described my childhood, minus the whole living-in-a-foreign-country thing.

And I have to come to Todd's defense... I HATED the way the froze that ending. I didn't think she was demonic, but we always turned the channel before that move. Freaky.
  • Jesslyn42 · 6 months ago
Hey sweet girl!! Just wanted to say "hi" to you and let you know that I'm still praying for you! Are you feeling ANY better? I sure hope so! Sending you lots and lots of HUGS!
  • gitzengirl · 6 months ago
Thanks, dear. I wish I could say it's getting better ... actually a bit of an extra setback the last few days but it'll be fine. It's nice to try to get online and distract myself a bit. Glad to see your face :)
  • Rebecca Zappe Cain · 6 months ago
gitzengirl, i have always meant to tell you this....your dog is very cute. he looks like he's a little naughty. (or ahem, "she" if your doggy is a girl.)
  • gitzengirl · 6 months ago
Thanks! You were dead-on on both counts... he is a boy and he is extremely naughty. He's also pretty much saved my life and sanity so I cut him some slack... he's a great companion and keeps me on my toes!

I have no intentions of writing a book, but Riley has inspired me with a great title: "My Life is So Crazy My Dog is on Anti-Depressants"

That should about sum him up...
  • Rebecca Zappe Cain · 6 months ago
Okay, THAT is the funniest daggone thing I have read in a long time. I seriously cackled out loud. You're a hoot.
  • angelac519 · 6 months ago
sara. you are always supposed to take my side. shame on you...

i know you aren't feeling great- i've been praying.

    love, A
  • gitzengirl · 6 months ago
I still have some dark chocolates sitting here to send to you... will that make up for my one defense-indiscretion? ;)

And thanks for the prayers... they are so appreciated at the moment. This funny post was actually just what I needed for a moment of distraction... you know, since Glee has failed me with no new episodes until the Fall...
  • Jesslyn42 · 6 months ago
This was great!! Again, I can tell you over and over, but it doesn't matter to me what you write...I LOVE it ALL and I mean every single word of that! Plus, you're still cute ~ even as a little girl! :)

By the way...did your Cabbage Patch doll have a really unique name? :)
  • Lauren Kelly · 6 months ago
Wanted to give this a try girl.... I love this new commenting system!!! Just wanted to say I love ya!!!!!!! :O)
  • blairb4 · 6 months ago
Thanks for giving me a good laugh tonight, especially as regards the demonic Laura! I'm right there with your husband. I had no interest in continuing to watch the show after those tumbling-down-the-hill shots in the intro...never watched a full show until adulthood! Now I (kinda) like it!

And I too had Kirk Cameron photos in my room (maybe not on the walls) and was overjoyed when his mother once called to order some gift products from my parents. I HAD to be the one to answer that phone when Mrs. Cameron called to place the order!

I forgot about Rainbow Brite...I need me some rainbows around this house! Thanks for the fun memories :)
  • facebook-1631351507 · 6 months ago
I can so relate to this post! You had me laughing, girl! Don't you know that my 12 year old has the COMPLETE Little House series on DVD. Yes, all 9, or whatever, seasons! And she still insists on DVRing them! Great stuff! And when she was 8 she was Mary for Halloween. You'll have to meet her someday and you all can talk about your favorite episodes. haha
  • Becky Cain · 6 months ago
But see, you and Todd are kindred spirits.

Ha, to this day when I throw that phrase out, people are like, "right, kindred spirits? Is that Biblical?" If they are not looking, I stick my tongue out at them like Nelly did so many times to the snot nosed boy (what was his name?) in Little House....and then I say, "Biblical? Oh no, I don't think so, but I am sure I heard it ten thousand times during my Anne of Green Gable days...

No one ever gets it. Seriously. Good times... Thanks for the stroll down memory lane. And the recollection of all the terrible hair do's thanks to punky bruster........ Remember the dopey hair irons that put kinks in your hair? Sure, we all sprayed the hair spray on and kinked our hair to near burnt stage. No one seemed to notice my hay wisping in the air to the sounds of Debbie Gibson as I roller-skated the night away with my friends.

Can you believe we made it?

Very fun! I have bosom friends too. And don't worry.. my seniors (I teach senior English) told me I look like Anne um.. . this year... And also Mary Poppins..

Apparently they think a teacher wearing skirts and having glasses is archaic. ha!
  • Angie · 6 months ago
What a trip down memory lane! I had a stuffed animal that was ALF! Oh, the eighties! And, I, too was a red headed girl named Angie that resembled Anne of Green Gables, so I won't say a word about you resembling her! :)
  • Rebecca Zappe Cain · 6 months ago
btw, I loved Kirk Cameron. Was sure if I could just meet him, he'd marry me for sure. And, my children just, I mean JUST (2 days ago) watched the Little House episode where Laura gets bit by Jasper--her raccoon she found--and they all thought she'd get rabies. Oh Melissa Gilbert--God bless you.........
  • Rebecca Zappe Cain · 6 months ago
and.....last comment....I absolutely hated alf. thought he was such a jerk.

Thanks for such a down to earth post - yours always are! I am especially excited to hear about your homeschool decision, as I am debating that very thing right now for my 5 year old. I think you have a lot of great insight and I value what you think! (PS - I loved Laura and Anne/Diana and Punky too!)
  • Jenny · 6 months ago
I loved Little House on the Prairies as well. I never watched Anne of Green Gables, but I imagine I'd like it. Just the title song makes me smile. My hubby isn't a fan either. Your photo was cute...you looked like Raggedy Ann...I just uploaded some doozies of me today...not so cute!LOL
  • Kristen · 6 months ago
I was never really into Laura Ingalls (we always seemed to live close to one of her homes so she was always on the field trip schedule at school) but I have an undying devotion to Anne. Oh, how I love Anne. My sisters & I still love to get together & have Anne marathons. One of the goals of my life is to take my daughter to PEI & visit the Avonlea Village & Green Gables & the Lake of Shining Waters. I can't wait until she's old enough to fall in love with Anne!
  • Rebecca · 6 months ago
Oh Angie...how I laughed aloud at this post. You brought back SO many memories!
I too was obsessed with Laura Ingalls. I thought that all would be right in my little world if I could just have a wardrobe that consisted of nothing but plaid dresses and calico bonnets.

I too can remember the day I "discovered" Anne and Diana. Oh, what joy! :-)

I just wanted to thank you for the Seven Prayers for our kids that you posted a few months ago. I have had them saved on my computer and the link on my blog, as I waited patiently for my first child to arrive. Now, that my baby girl's birth is only a week away.....and she has a name, I finally went back and plugged in her name and printed them to keep in her nursery as a reminder to pray for her throughout the day. I consider it such an honor to be able to pray over her bible verses that you so wonderfully picked out. It brings tears to my eyes to think about praying for this precious baby in my belly. Blessings to you! Gina

Oh Angie, I love you girl. Seriously, it is almost midnight and your post has me laughing so hard I hope I didn't wake anyone up. The demonic Laura Ingalls just sent me over the edge! I am loving the "not so well written" Angie! Ah... Growing Pains and Kirk.....my MIL had dinner with him last weekend. Too funny! **Cindi**

I think we could be 'bosom friends'. Seriously, I think I could've written this post. I've even got the red-headed Cabbage Patch Doll (to match my hair, of course), Laura Ingalls dress and bonnet. I wore out my Anne Of Green Gables videotape and I could recite the movie way back when. My best friend is my Diana.
Kirk Cameron was plastered all over my wall, too :)

oh and I got to wrapped up talking about my soon to be.......that I forgot to PS that I was once my Cabbage Patch doll for Halloween. I had the braided pig tails too......and a bib. I think I was six, but it is still embarassing.......and I remember all my class mates asking what I was. So funny what we remember 25 years later.
  • Monica · 6 months ago
I can relate to everything you just wrote. Seriously. I have been missing those good ole shows lately!
  • Kristen · 6 months ago
    Angie,
I often think that would be friends if I lived in Nashville and actually met you in person. After reading your post today, I am sure of it. Anne of Green Gables is my all time favorite book. My dear friend, Carrie, growing up and I played Anne and Diana even in 6th grade. We fought over who got to be Anne...we were bosom buddies. Your post today, resonated with me. Since my early years, I have found several others who are Anne enthusiasts. I only wish you could have had one when you were a kid.

We have decided to homeschool next year. Our oldest will be in first grade. I look forward to your sharing on this subject. As always, I love your posts. Thanks.

    Kristen

I have this indelible memory of my older sister, playing Mary, & I (of course as Laura) wearing bonnets that someone gave us, running across a "field" in front of our apartment complex in MS. We pretended that it was a wide open prairie, though I'm sure it's much smaller than I remember it to be. I must have read the whole series of books 10 or 20 times apiece as well as watching the series...now my girls love reading them. Pretty cool to share with another generation, I must say.
  • Katie · 6 months ago
Oh my Angie. I was smiling through the entire post. You are such a kindred spirit! The Little House and Green Gables books were MY LIFE during my childhood. I had (and still do have)the entire series of both on my bookshelves.....and always loved to imagine becoming Anne when I grew up. I never really got into the Little House tv show (just a tad before my time, although my mom loves catching re-runs of it) but I do own the Anne DVDs. I also have come to the conclusion (various times) that I was born in the wrong century...although early 19th century England would seem to be my niche....(a result of reading Jane Austen too many times, I suspect.!). And last, but not least, who says loving the smell of old books is unhealthy? Everyone at some point in his or her life should go into used bookstores, pick up a weather-worn copy of a classic, press it close, and just inhale....it's one of the best smells on Earth. Besides freshly mown grass or the air after a thunderstorm has just passed through, that is.

Thanks so much for writing this blog, by the way. Although this is the first time I've posted a comment, I've been following you since the beginning....and I've learned so, so much from you. God bless.
  • Jenny Sparks · 6 months ago
I still read the anne books. Adam thinks that's all kinds of wrong.

    Anyhoo.

I laughed out loud when you said you grew into your nose. Not because I think you haven't (I don't) *grin* but because I remember when somone who saw me after many, many years responded to my hello with "Jenny! Hi! You've grown into your teeth!"

    Oh yes they did.

"And you're a boob," I did NOT say.

You want to know what else cracks me up? Your not so well written is how I talk. For realz. All the time. Can you imagine our conversations? XD

    Angie,

I absolutely loved this post!! Little House was my favorite show growing up (and is still a fave today!!) Like yourself, growing up, I too always thought how cool it would be to live like Laura Ingalls and how simple and pleasant life must have been for them back then. Well, until I grew up and realized that it wasn't. Though oftentimes I find myself pining for simpler times - like Laura's childhood or the 80s! hehe

PS- Melissa Gilbert, Allison Arngrim (Nellie) and Patrick Labyorteaux (Andrew Garvey) are all on Twitter. You should check them out! :)

What a fun post! Life has been heavy lately and this light look at things really helped - thanks! I was too that girl who hovered between 'cool' and 'not-so-much'...in fact I still do. AND - Little House and Anne of Green Gables were favorites of mine growing up - I wonder if they are available on Audibook - that would be a fun listen.....

If this is any indication of what rambling, incoherent posts entail, I say, 'Keep 'em coming!".
  • Katy · 6 months ago
I LOVE Anne of Green Gables! I was the shyest girl in my high school but when they annouced that the One Act Play was going to be AofGG not only did I try out but I landed the highly hot headed partly comedic role of Rachel and had a blast chewing on everyone around me in most every scene! Changed my life forever...at the end of that school year I ran for Student Council President and won! All because of a dramatic little red head. :)
  • Kandy · 6 months ago
Angie, this is sooo weird. I think we're long lost bosom friends. No lie! We have the exact same taste in books and shows, but then again, I guess everyone did back then, huh? Or maybe I just like to think that so I don't feel like such a nerd :) Oh, and by the way, I'm actually in the middle of reading "Little House in the Big Woods" to my children now. We're almost finished with it, then it will be on to "Farmer Boy", the second in the series.
Also, Kate looks just like you in that picture. And I think I had that dress (totally embarassed by that fact, btw) and the Cabbage Patch doll with the red hair and pigtails. AND, I fell asleep every night with Kirk Cameron smiling down at me from my ceiling. AND I wouldn't miss a Punky Brewster episode for anything; it came on every day at 4:00, just in time for me to get off the bus, have a snack, and get comfy. I'm telling you, this is weird.
  • Shannon · 6 months ago
I remember all of those shows very well. Except Alf. I remember Alf, but not the shows. My parents wouldn't let us watch them. And I LOVED Anne of Green Gables....and Gilbert Blythe.
  • Kylie0526 · 6 months ago
I totally remember all of those shows. Punky Brewster was my very favorite. I dressed like her many, many times just to play with my sisters. So of course I remember the Candace Cameron episode! I LOVE Little House on the Prairie and just reading this post made me happy like a child again! Oh and I think I had that same Cabbage Patch doll.

p.s. not loving the new comment system... maybe I will once I get it figured out. :)

My two favorite shows growing up were Little House on the Prairie and Anne of Green Gables. I actually still have the videos of Anne. LOVE IT! Did you know that Little House on the Prairie is coming to TPAC this year (or early 2010) and Melissa Gilbert is playing Ma? You really ought to go see it and take Todd with you! I am sure he would love it!
  • Amber · 6 months ago
For the record, I'd like to state that I like this "babbling, random" Angie just as much as the well-written, thoughtful Angie. This Angie is funny. :)

While I didn't dress like Laura, I wore a large straw hat to my 6th grade band concert and was made fun of for MONTHS afterwards! My mom convinced me that I looked nice and still swears to this day that it was cute. It wasn't bad, but not in style in the school circles!

I can also relate to loving and longing for the simplicity of the days of Laura and Anne. Still, to this day, I love that period. Have you seen the Hallmark series Love Comes Softly based on the books by Janette Oke? I love watching them. The beginning movies of the series are my favorite.
  • Roxanne · 6 months ago
Clearly, we must be around the same age...because you just described my childhood.

Except, my picture would be me dressed like Punky Brewster, because she was awesome!

Rainbow Brite was my alltime fave, we even played it on the playground. In Kindergarten, I made a boy named Rufus be the guy (Red Butler?).

And my best friend in middle school? Hollie was my KINDRED SPIRIT!

And somehow, I had completely forgotten all about Alf.
  • Tabaitha Kaye · 6 months ago
Oh my gosh, I love this post. It brought back so many childhood memories of the TV shows I used to watch and can I say, I love Anne of Green Gables. By the way, we are old for remembering all those shows, age is just a number :)

I'm sorry but you look like Wendy in that picture, lol. (you know from Wendy's restraunt).

Loved this post, I LOVED little house on the prarie, Ann of Green Gables (but it was on Disney back when you had to pay extra for it so I didn't get to watch it much), and Punky Brewster. I always wonder why they don't show re-runs of Punky. Oh, and Alf...my mom LOVED that show, lol. we never missed an episode of it.

Oh and by the way...O wore my hair in 2 braids just the other day :)

    I love Laura, too!

My rag doll was also named Abigail.

And one of my "requirements" when we built our house was a porch swing. I use it every day!

Among other things, those are a few of the reasons I love this post.

PS- Are you sure that isn't Kate in the picture??

Oh my gosh that is about the most hilarious post I have read in a long time! Anywhere! Ok, we have alot in common. Although, I LOVED Small wonder! I even saw the gal that played Vicky at a parade when I was kid and I about died. Good times. Good times.

    Thanks for that laugh =)

Oh Angie...that post took me back to the days of punky brester, anne of green gables, alf, small wonder (i do remember that one...I did watch it often!) and little house (i used to watch it every morning in my mom and dad's room). Do you remember the after school specials? they were always some kind of preteen or teenage drama (serious and sometimes heavy stuff). My brothers and I were also hooked on the dukes of hazard, mr. t (can't remember the name of the show), and night rider.
as for the books I was an avid reader too. Did you read the judy blume books: My favorite was are you there God, it's me Margret, Otherwise known as sheila the great, Blubber, or tales of a 4th grade nothing!
too many great memories...thank you! I've been struggling to remember the good from my childhood...so this post helped greatly!

Ps. Have to say that the pic of you looks so much like Kate!

I think we would have been good friends growing up!!!! You remind me so much of the little girl I used to be. I just starting DVR'ing Litle House recently. It's something I want Harper to watch one day.
And in that picture - I think your girls look a lot like you - especially Kate. SO fun!!!!!!
  • Michele · 6 months ago
The only one I did not watch was ALF. I have a thing about puppets. In fact, even as an adult - hate puppets. But I so wanted to be Anne for some reason. I also wanted to be Mary (I think I wanted her hair, and she seemed so smart.) I also LOVED Ma who was the opposite of my own. I also read every single book in the Anne and Laura series, and I think I still have them somewhere in my dad's garage.
  • kekebe · 6 months ago
I always prefered the Laura Ingalls books to the show. I have a problem with shows that mangle a good books content. I loved Alf...hehe! I have the Anne of Green Gables books and the vhs videos. Great post!

Hi Angie - I am a fairl new blog follower - just a few months or so. This story and the photo cracked me up!!!!! Thanks hon, I needed that! I am writing to ask a favor - I hang out alot on the Nest on one of the discussion boards (decor and renovating) and one of the well liked/lovbed posters just found out that her baby has a genetic issue and will not survive (similiar to sweet Audrey). I wanted to know if you had a few moments to visit her newly created blog - she is a wonderful writer (like you) and I think she could really benefit from all your went thru and what to expect. The name of ber blog is "When October Falls" - it would be such a blessing. I feel the need to gather up support for her, even tho I don't know her IRL. But I believe in helping people who are struggling - and I know you could help. Thanks so much for your kindness and this wonderful blog that praises our God and holds him in our hearts and minds.

If the date on that picture is right, we're right about the same age, so I understand everything you've written. I can even remember the Little House credits with Laura! Anyway, I think you got the last line wrong - shouldn't it say Laura is no match for Vickie, the Small Wonder chick? She seriously creeped me out, although I still have random ALF moments pop into my head sometimes!

I loved Little House! I wanted to BE Laura. My daughter now has the book series...she doesn't know about the TV show...an enjoys reading it. Once she finishes the books, I'll introduce her to the TV show.

You'd have made a great Pippi Longstocking, too!

Growing up in Korea I was thrilled when we could get the shows biligual! Ah, the memories you have brought back of avidly watching the taped recordings of shows from the US sent to us by loved ones. I didn't come back until the 9th grade and my transition didn't go smoothly either, but we live and learn, and now I just wish we could give our kids that international upbringing that I so value today. Oh and nothing will ever top Anne of Green Gables, I can't wait until my little girl is old enough to appreciate it!

What a funny post! I can't believe how much Kate looks like you in this picture! I loved the Little House on the Prairie as well but never saw Anne of Green Gables. Maybe I should rent it now. :)
  • Lindsey · 6 months ago
This post was great! I once dressed up like Anne in the 6th grade, although I was banned from Halloween, so I don't know exactly what I was dressing up for? I mean, I went to SCHOOL with the puffiest sleeves I could find and a long, high-waisted brown skirt. I read all the Anne books, including the ones about her children. And, I also watched a "new" (2000) Anne movie the other day! I saw it on Netflix, and had to watch just to see if it was as good. It was pretty good too, although it wasn't based on any of the books: Gilbert goes to WW1, and Anne joins the Red Cross to find him after he goes MIA.

Little House was a great show. I remember watching it on TV every week. As a matter of fact, I love to watch things with Melissa Gilbert now. And I didn't get into Anne of Green Gables till I was an adult. I love that movie.
For a family vacation about 16 years ago, went to Minn. and went to Walnut Grove and Sleepy Hollow.
    Thanks for sharing the picture

    You are hillarious!

And that picture of you looks so much like your sweet Kate! I think it's the eyes.

I remember Alf, Punky Brewster (in fact, my nickname in middle school was in fact Punky!), and the like... and am secretly jealous that you met Candace Cameron, a.k.a DJ TANNER!!! Can't forget Full House!

Praying for your progress on your book... I know that the Lord will be doing a mighty work.
  • Kristen Ng · 6 months ago
I remember that Charles Ingalls (Michael Landan) used to always say that he was the richest man in Walnut Grove. My dad used to say the same thing (except, insert the name of the same town I grew up in...). It was so great that my dad taught us that there were more important things than money and, as cheesy as it sounded then, sometimes I find myself thinking the exact same thing now, as I'm surrounded by my wonderful family and the many blessings He has bestowed on me. :-)

Praying that all is going well with your book, too!

I was here in the States and had the same notions about living life simply - much as Laura Ingalls did. My sentiments were more from the books than the TV show, but nonetheless, she was my heroine of early days. I had a skirt that I insisted on wearing more often than I'll mention until I outgrew it.

I still longed for that simple life for a very long time, until I realized that God had placed me in this time era so that modern medicines could help me have children. One hundred or more years ago, that would not have happened.

I do believe that God wants us to live our lives much as they did by focusing on Him, our families, our friends, and then our jobs/obligations, etc. So many times we get it turned around. So, here's to the life Laura showed us how to live, may we live it to God's glory!

I remember clearly all of those Little House episodes... And I so loved them! I especially loved the loft that the girls got to sleep in every night. As I scrolled down your blog reading I made a very quick stop on your photo and then quickly rolled back up to your Kate. She is a duplicate stamp of you Angie! What a beauty you both are!

Oh my I LOVED Vicky and my daughter used to go in the closet and pretend she was a robot. LOL. My granddaughter just had the first LHOTP book read to her (she is 4) and I saw the horse episode on TV the other day. I was thinking my Em would be petrified of some of the episodes! Such drama! She may have to get a bit older to view them :-) My "bosom friend" was called home by the King of Kings July 17, 2007, but oh how we loved to watch Anne together! She of course was Diana, and I the frecled Anne with an "E". Have not been able to bring myself to watch it, but I will one day and smile and think of my kindred spirit. Thanks for sharing....In His Grip, Lynnebee

I'm so with you Angie! Anne is my favorite book character and one I feel I resemble often. I also love Little House, so I can relate. You were cute way back then, and now you are beautiful, so don't let it get to you! (:

We live less than two hours from PEI, so we definitely grew up reading Anne in school, visiting the sites in the summers, and comparing ourselves to the characters in the books. I hope that you, Todd and the kids are able to make a trip to PEI sometime while the kids are young, it's a gorgeous, amazing place, very quaint, very much like they describe in the book. The beaches are breathtaking, the dirt is really red, and the folks are unhurried, friendly, and down to earth. Definitely worth it.

I love this "other side" of you, the random, funny and witty writing style is a lot of fun too. I think you could write anything, from the greatest novel to the back of cereal boxes, and we'd be mesmerized.
  • Amber · 6 months ago
oh my goodness! I used to think Kate favored Todd, but seeing that picture, she looks so much like you!!! And I could relate to your entire post! I love Anne of Green Gables. I've even pondered if I would be a dork to name a little girl Avonlea! :)

Are we the same age?! Because Alf! and Small Wonder! And I had a dress just like that when I was six...which would have been in 1986...anyway.

I did not like Little House. (I KNOW.) I think it is because of two things though - one, my mom made me watch it when it came on TV, because she loved it. And two - I just really did not like how mean Nellie was! It made me feel so bad, because I was the kid who got picked on...

However, I watched it as an adult (the episode where Laura takes the teacher exam, and she and Nellie get in the fight by the lake...) and liked it. So I need to find some DVDs somewhere.

So fun! I don't recall the braid across the face. But I think it was more that I was afraid they were going to trip running downhill that fast!

I remember and LOVED all of the shows you mentioned! Oh the TV shows they had back then, huh?

Thank you for sharing a memory of your childhood! Its great to see how the past helps influence the future (home-schooling, I mean) :).

Ang ~ I so think that we need to revisit the "old days" more often, as you do in this post! It's so much fun to remember those shows and styles. Of course, it's not so much fun to remember my 7th and 8th grade pictures, where I actually thought that I could pull that look off... ugh! Great post, as usual ~ thanks for sharing!

Angie, I must admit I has a similar obsession with Little House on the Prarie. I thought my future husband was going to be like Almonzo...hard working and "oh so handsome". Well, my husband works extremely hard for our family and he is my handsome man! Not too long ago I had a re-obsession with Little House. When my little Charlie was born I found it on tv one day while nursing. Well, one episode and I was hooked again. I would record it and watch it in the wee hours of the night when I was up with Charlie. After three month I went back to teach the remainder of the school year...I quickly discovered that I did not have time for my Little House so I sadly gave it up (exhaustion played a big role in giving it up as well). Anyway, I also long for a simple life, sitting on big white rocking chairs on my front porch sipping lemonade as the kids play! Oh life is so crazy, sometimes we have to create our own simplicity. Thanks for the smiles and the fond memories!!! Oh, I believe I have a similar photo of myself except my Cabage Patch Doll and I were blonde :) Love Ya! ~Melissa

Angie, it's ok if this post isn't a deep one, I loved it! The Little House books are what got me loving books, my uncle gave me Little House on the Prairie for my 9th birthday and I soon had to have the whole series. My favorites, though, are the Anne books. I have my mom's collection from the '40s and every few years I read through the whole series again. I loved the movies (I watched them on PBS) but never liked the Little House shows. I was older when it was on and it made me mad that it didn't follow the books! It's ok that you looked like Anne, in my mind she was was a pretty little girl, even though she didn't think so. I was supposed to be named Anne, but with the last name Smith, my mom thought it sounded like an alias. However, my daughter's middle name is Anne-with-an-E just because of the books!

Angie, thank you so much for the walk down memory lane! Your posts, whether funny or serious, are always so beautifully written. I was not a Little House fan when I was younger but the other shows you mentioned brought back so many warm memories. I laughed when you mentioned your Kirk Cameron poster because I had one myself that I would swoon over!

Oh, when I first saw the picture that you posted of yourself when you were younger, I thought it was Kate!!

OMG....i had that same dress, and pretty much that same cabbage patch doll (and that picture? that's kate in a few years!!!). my husband and i have discussed in depth that, if we are blessed with children, we will probably choose to homeschool them also and, yes, kind of control what type of children they come in contact with, only because of the total cruelty that kids endure at the hands and mouths of one another. that and the degredation of society that is upon us. sadly, there are things that are taught and learned in school that kids are told must be acceptable that we do not agree with....i wish we could find our own walnut grove for all of us to live in together :-)

and, by the way, we STILL watch little house on the prairie reruns....my husband love laura ingalls :-)

Keep the random posts coming - love them! Oh, & I'm with you on the Venus Flytraps. I did several years of science fair projects & went to state competitions with them - mainly because I knew everything there was to know (back then) on carnivorous plants.

I never got into the Little House show too much, but I devoured the books over & over. The shows were just too sappy for me - even Nellie was tiresome. I mean, who has a mother who never raises her voice, even when the crops fail & they're living on wheat? Oh, wait, that was in the books, not the show.

Anyway, you write whatever your randomness produces, & we will still devour the words.

And, Kate's a total clone of you!

Long time reader, first time comment. I, too, share a love for Little House. Although my story is not near as funny as to why. I have sent a link to my sister, for she understands this "interest" in all things Laura. We still jokingly tell each other " I'm a WOMAN, A WOMAN, and I HATE you all!" Pretending to slam the door in Manly's face and make the high pitched music sound. Do you remember that one? Just wanted to say, it is clear you are writing your book on the side of writing this blog, for as you are practicing with writing more and more, it is obvious your writing ability is increasing . Practice makes perfect, am I right? You are very talented, and well-written.

Oh my. All I can say is "Amen." I loved, LOVED, loved Little House on the Prairie and had dreams of living in that little house and going to Ms. Beadle's school with a tiny little chalk board in my hand. Thanks for bringing back the memories! I cracked up reading this.
And that episode of Punky Brewster - YES! I never looked at a milk carton the same way after that one.
  • Kelley · 6 months ago
Oh Angie...you are a woman after my own heart. We would have been dorky "bosom friends" back in the day. Not only did I dress up in my grandmother's robe (because it was long and I could "imagine" that it was Laura Ingalls-esque) and spend hours sweeping the porch because I was pretending that I lived in a cabin in the olden days, but to this day, the Anne of Green Gables/Avonlea is still one of my favorite movies ever. I have watched it so many times on VHS that I am at the point where I am going to have to buy it on DVD because it is worn slap out and I think Meegan Follows would look much better in high def and I could cry even harder when Matthew passes amongst the cows. I have also told my hubby numerous times that I want to go to P.E. Island for vacation. I think he would let me, bless him. I told my parents so many times that I was born in the wrong century and I think they believed me, especially when I started trying to spell my middle name (which really is Ann), Ann-E because I could be more like HER. I also loved Punky Brewster (both the show and the cartoon with the magic cat) and her pink high tops with a passion and aquired some of my own that I treasured. Dorky they may be, but there is NOTHING like an afternoon watching the whole saga of Anne, Gilbert, and Diana. LOVE THEM.

Girl. GIRL. How I loved, liked loved loved, this post. And I have no idea how old you are (I am awful at guessing and usually do 20 year spans so I'd say you're b/w 20 and 40) but I'm only 26 (which feels older every day-- ugh!) but I loved every show you mentioned. I loved me some Alf, Small Wonder, Little House, and I canNOT even tell you how much I loved Anne of Green Gables. "The Lady of Shalot". :-) Did you ever watch the related show Avonlea on the Disney Channel? I loved that one, too. My mom, older sis, and I used to watch that together. I used to play in our old wooden garage and would pretend I was in my own little house and the prairie and I'm still waiting for my Manly! Luckily, I do have a Diana, which sometimes I think is more important anyway. And guess what? From 6-7 on Sunday nights Alf is on here and I watch it whenever I can. (Yes, I'm a geek). Hmm...maybe that's why I don't have a Manly. Ha.

SO, this post is all over the place and I used the word "love" in it more than I have in the past month, but I wanted you to know that this post made my heart smile and brought back some excellent memories of my childhood.

There needs to be a support group for those of us who grew up on a steady diet of Little House on the Prairie, The Waltons and Anne of Green Gables. They could call it "Coping with the 21rst Century". I find myself reminscing about days gone by, days, I might add, that occurred years and years and years before I was ever born. Sigh.....

Thanks for that post! I laughed my whole way through! I remember all of those shows and even some of the episodes you mentioned! I too thought to myself when I was little that I wanted that....my mother and I used to watch Anne of Green Gables and then Anne of Avonlee or however that was spelled too! :)

You should have gone to school with me and my friends. We all LOVED The Little House on the Prairie and Anne series! Read them all the time. Didn't hurt that we went to a Catholic school, so all wore the same blue plaid skirts or navy blue cords!

Thanks for the memories. I knew every single show. My boys watched Little House now. There's something about the simplicity of it all. So God has made divine arrangements for the simplicity. They don't have cable anymore and video games are limited big time. They haven't watched TV in 4 weeks, I love it.

It was an enjoyable post. And I am sure many enjoyed.

I have ALWAYS thought that Little House on the Prairie days would be so much "simpler" and that if I could pick an "era" to live in, that would be it in a second.

Mind you, I think once the first signs of winter would arrive, I wouldn't feel so adventurous and I would wonder where all my modern day amenities to keep me warm were. I don't think mama could make me a pair of uggs!

I spewed out my coffee when I saw that picture of you on that Halloween! I am just a few years older than you, but I loved Laura Ingall which led to a love and obssession of all things Holly Hobby (do you remember her?). Any way I have almost the exact photo as you you except I have a Holly Hobby get up and my mom bought me a wig and we braided it to form two long braids on either side of my head. We slapped a bonnet on top and I felt precious! I even won the costume contest at our church! Good times!

Oh my gosh, I was just laughing my head off through that entire post. That was funny. I'm with you..I sometimes think I was born in the wrong century. I recently moved to Pennsylvania and I seriously think about moving in with some Amish people. It fasinates me and I long for that simplier, slower lifestyle. I, too, decided to homeschool and sometimes struggle to "fit it" AND follow my convictions at the same time.
BTW, I had that same exact cabbage patch doll. I'm not a look-alike like you are, though. :) It was just the only one my parents could get me because at that time those darn cabbage patch dolls were flying off the shelves. I was lucky to get one at all and that my parents weren't injured in the process of getting it for me! :) I'm looking forward to your "homeschool" posts!

Angie, Thank you for writing and allowing us to be a part of your world and reminding us of the simpler times in life..."Back to the Basics of Life" it reminds me of your post and is the title of an old 4Him song. ;)

The photo you chose reminds me of childhood innocence that today you just don't see at 10 years old... I also can see how your girls resemble you. :) Remember too, friend that we are in His image... we all think of ourselves as geeky, awkward children at some point in our lives but to Him, we are beautiful flowers.

Can't wait till the Homeschool post.

Thank you Angie for a little glimpse into your past. I too loved Laura Ingalls and even caught myself watching an episode as an adult if I came across it. I have thought many times about how much simpler life would be if we could go back to those days, or maybe even into the 1940's or 1950's. People weren't nearly as caught up in obtaining "things" and running and going. We have not been turning on the tv in the evenings nearly as much lately as we used to. We play games or dance in the living room to the music blaring. If the tv goes on, it is after the kids are in bed but most times, that time is spent reading a book or checking emails.

Thank you so much for the blast into the past.

I loved this post Angie- sometimes the radom and light-hearted hit the spot! I had the same Cabbage Patch kid too!!! Her name was Myrtle and I loved her to pieces. Not sure if you know, but they just came out with the 25th anniversary dolls... my parents bought my daughter an identical one like I had for Christmas last year! She is only 6 months right now though- but soon I hope her "baby" will bring her happiness! I also loved all of your memories of TV and the 80's- oh to be young again! Good Luck as you continue to work on your book!!!!

Seriously, reading that message was a wonderful way to start my day! You had me cracking up and I think I may have scared a co-worker or two. As an MK in Korea, I have vivid memories of everything you said. We were lucky enough to have access to not only the American Army TV station but we also had some weird Japanese cable channel that showed some great movies (and some really bad stuff after midnight - don't think my parents ever discovered that one). We loved Alf so much we named our orange cat that (even though Alf the alien actually ate cats). And we still have VHS tapes full of the Cosby show. They're buried somewhere in my house because I refuse to let them go, even though I haven't had a working VHS player in over 10 years! And, as a gift a few years ago, because of my infatuation with Anne of Green Gables, my husband bought me the three DVD set of the Anne movies. I still watch those at home when I can get the kids to let me steal the TV away from their SpongeBob/Hannah Montana fixes.

It's as if you just described my life as an MK! No need to explain ALF to me. Our own box of tapes from my grandmother had BETTER have all the latest episodes of ALF! As for "Anne of Green Gables," my mother got the tapes in the mail and allowed us (my mom, sister and me) to watch the whole 8 hour mini-series in ONE DAY. From that point on, I began to refer to my best friend as my "kindred spirit," which we still call each other to this day (we're in our....ummm....30s!). I think that whole series made me the romantic I am today. :-) I have no doubt we would have lots of fun memories to share growing up in other countries. Thanks for giving me a big smile on my face today. I might just have to call my BFF today, and when she answers say, "Hello, my kindred spirit."

What a great random post about the good days. I think that everyone desires simplicity and when life gets complicated, it just doesn't stop. It's great that God gives us ways to practice simplicity as a chance to bless others in abundance when we are blessed in abundance by Him. For some reason, every time I hear my kids play they often start out with "lets pretend we are poor." They are looking for the simplicity. I think, "If they only knew." But then I know that they are rich with what they have, the love of Christ, and they feel secure in that. It's really all we need.
  • Chelsea · 6 months ago
Now I know why I like you so much. Kindred spirits can sense each other even if they refruse to words like "bosom friend". My best friend and I still pretend we're Anne and Diana. :) And I've always thought that I would've loved living in Laura Ingalls day. Thanks for the non-serious post and look into your childhood. Good to know that even you went through that awkward phase. :)

I love Laura. I've read all the books numerous, numerous times... and seen probably every, single episode.

Have you ever read/seen Christy by Catherine Marshall? It is by far my favorite book of all time! It has had such a strong influence on my life.

I was also that little girl who had an unhealthy love of books, who pretended I lived in the big woods, or on the prairie or on the banks of plum creek. I was also homeschooled, and I never felt like I was weird, or I was odd... because my Mom nurtured those hopes and dreams. I never had pencils thrown at my head, and I grew up with such a deep understanding and love of Christ, that I really have no option but to home school my children. Why thrust them into a world of sin and unhappiness, when I can provide a much safer, much happier world in a calm, safe environment? It's not being over protective... it's simply allowing them to stay a child for as long as possible.

I look forward to reading your post on home schooling.

And you're right. Alf has NOTHING on Laura!
  • stacy doolittle · 6 months ago
Oh, Angie, thanks for the memories you just brought up with this post! My father was in the army and when I was a child we lived in Germany for three years. We only had one channel- the armed forces network- and didn't get to see most of the popular shows that were on at the time. We DID get to watch Little House on the Prairie every week though. I'll never forget gathering around the tv to watch. Sometimes we'd even get to eat dinner in the living room and watch Little House! It brings back so many memories!

And I had those moments, too, where I wished I lived in the Little House days- walking to the one room schoolhouse, doing homework by candlelight as pa played the fiddle. Sometimes I still wish I lived during that time. Life was much simpler then.

I also have to mention that the first thing I noticed when I saw your picture was not your crooked bangs or your dress. I was struck by how much Kate looks like you! Wow Angie! You have a little mini me!

Ah, this post was like a breath of fresh air for me this morning. I was also "that" girl in many ways when I was growing up. Red hair, freckles, awful hair, braces, huge glasses, etc, etc...you get the picture. Definitely not one of the "cool" kids! Now my 5 year old son will enter Kindergarten in August, and some of those old emotions come flooding back. I have recently been struggling with coming to terms that he is actually going to school, but of course there are lots of reasons for that. I want to protect him from the ugliness of this world, but realistically we all see it at some point. Anyway, enough of my rambling! I thoroughly enjoy reading your blog. You are so inspirational...thank you for sharing your life with all of us readers :)

Ugh, I completely relate... Please know, you are not the whole woman born in the wrong century! As a child, I adored the whole Little House series and one of the serious highlights of my young life was when I discovered the tv show. I actually took to calling my mom and dad "Ma and Pa" for several months. And I truly believed that if there were just some way I could transport Laura Ingalls to my house, we would be best friends. The same goes for Anne...I was mocked for calling my best friend in third grade my "bosom friend." I tried to explain, but it was no use. I had the joy of playing Josie Pye in a high school play, and even though she is mean and hateful, it was just too much fun to be part of that world for a short while. And I can admit it, my roommates and I often indulge in a little evening LHOTP...because what 24 year old doesn't have most of the seasons on dvd?

This is such an awesome blog entry! I was a huge fan of Punky, Laura, Small Wonder, Alf, Mr. Belvedere.... and Charles in Charge!
  • Tracie · 6 months ago
That was so funny and brought back so many memories. I used to live out in the middle of nowhere on a farm and I would get so excited when Little House came on that I would almost cry! I was Laura and my sister was Mary - in my world - in the pastures around our farm :O) Seriously, Alf? I could never really understand that show. When Punky Brewster came out I wanted everything rainbow. How's that look on the farm I ask you? Then I grew up and went to my first "revival" - Rodney Howard-Browne and saw a car with a rainbow sticker on it. I of course wanted a BIG one on our car right away because of course, Punky Brewster would have one on her car. Thankfully before we put the big sticker on we were told of the new meaning of the rainbow sticker - and it isn't God's promise not to flood the earth! Ha Ha on me. I still chuckle thinking of us outside getting ready to sticker our first car!!

I was so happy to have a daughter so I could watch Little House episodes again and have an excuse. AND she and I watched Anne of Green Gables for the first time when she was six or seven. We love that movie. Now Pride and Prejudice is a favorite of ours. (She's 20 now by the way.)
Thanks for the walk down memory lane.

Great post. I loved Little House on the Prairie. My sister and I used to watch it and make my brother sit through it (he hated it lol - maybe it's a guy thing). I teach psychology at a community college in Texas and I have been able to successfully tie Little House on the Prairie into psychology (I tie a lot of tv into psychology, but was most proud of myself when I found a way to tie in Little House). When we talk about different structures in the brain and are on the occipital lobes I have showed the clip courtesy of YouTube where Adam gets hurt in the explosion and regains his sight. My theory is when he first lost his sight (they said he had hit his head) that he had damaged his occipital lobes.

I used to watch Little House with my sister all the time when we were kids. LOVED it! My sister and I each had "Little House" bonnets and even though they mostly hung on a nail in our rooms, I loved mine! I used to daydream about living back in Laura's time, and my sister feels the same way. My mom used to read all the Little House books to us (even though we could read ourselves!) We were so sad when she finished the last one!
Anne of Green Gables. I can't wait until my girls are old enough to watch... again, ADORED the series.
    Thank you for the memories!

Oh, and I'm sure you've heard this comment already, but I can't keep myself from saying it anyway... The picture of you with the pigtails? SO looks like Kate! I know, I know... you aren't so fond of the picture! But I mean it as a compliment! I always thought she looked like you, but seeing a pic of you in your childhood confirmed it! You're both beautiful, no matter if you chop your bangs or whatever! (I did the same - 6th grade, the night before school pictures. Call me Spike. The braided ribbon barrettes with pretty beads at the ends did nothing to distract from that mistake, either! I should have worn my bonnet!) ;)

Praying for you as you work on your book!

First, I too LOVED Anne of Green Gables, my 13 year old daugther and I STILL cozy down to watch it together - all of them, one after another. I also still LOVE Little House and it still airs on the TV station where I work, with significant ratings I might add from ALL AGES and DEMOS!

PS. Kirk Cameron - still totally hot!

I'm laughing at loud over here! I can relate to this entire post, from the creepy tv shows to being teased as a child to deciding to homeschool. Despite all the trauma in your childhood, I think you turned out quite alright. Keep up the good work!

i just read your post and the funny thing is my husband and i were just having this conversation this morning when we were getting out of bed this morning. (yes we often have these strange conversations in the morning) my husband is venezuelan and watched all these shows in spanish. i grew up there and like you had people tape them and mail them to us! my husband loved alf and small wonder i happen to think alf was rather freaky myself! anyways.. don't mean to bore you but just thought i would share! :)
i also wanted to tell you that i have decided to homeschool this year. i'm rather terrified of it but feel God is telling me to do it so i must follow. but i like you am doing it becuase the world around me feels like it is falling into this downward spiral and i want some sense of simplicity in it. erin

That is a great posting don't feel bad for incohearnt ramblings. Again being a guy I will admit Anne of Green Gables was really good. I am also a little familiar with the Cameron Family. I remember Candace and her mom Barb saying how much they enjoyed Selah. Plus Candace knows that probably half the teeny bop gilrs had a picutre of Kirk hanging up on their wall.

Dear Angie, My next daughter will have Anne with an e for a middle name because without it, it just looks dreadful. My hsuband finally bought me the DVD set of Anne of Green Gables because he got tired of me screaming when GPTV would only show one a weekend and he got tired of watching them AND I am currently forcing the Little House Books on my 9 year old. And dont worry, I had (and still have) the same Cabbage Patch Doll.........

This right here is a post I can relate to. Anne of Green Gables, Little House - those books, more than the shows although I watched plenty, were my obsession. I wore the atrocious purple, high neck, lace bodice bridesmaids dress from my mom's wedding to my stepfather to "play" little house all the time, and insisted on having a white ceramic with blue flowers "wash basin and pitcher" in my room at all times to wash up in the morning. So funny, how many other women I have met who felt similarly...I just bought my neice the Little House books this past Christmas, and even though she is of a different generation, I hope she grows to appreciate them like I did.

No, YOU can't be Anne, b/c I was Anne, LOL :) As a 30-something year old woman, I still consider my best friend in the world my "kindred spirit" b/c she is so much more that than just my best friend. And Laura Ingalls? I wanted to marry Almonzo (the tv version), for sure, ha! They were some of the first chapter book I read. I'm with you Alf and Small Wonder, what was that? But while Kirk Cameron was (is) a cutie, I held (hold? ha!) a flame for Jason Bateman...yea, I was a Silver Spoons viewer, lol! All this to say, your post was just the humor I needed today, thanks Angie!

We could have SO been childhood friends. I am so glad to know there were other little girls in the world like me!! I so wanted to live in Laura Ingalls "time". And now, one of my daughters LOVES Little House books. She asks often to go to Laura Ingals' birthplace.

BTW, this is my first time to comment on your blog. You are very encouraging to me. And Selah is one of my favorite Christian groups. And actually I had been reading the blog for a while before I knew Todd was your husband. I know, I know, it takes me a while sometimes....

Wow. Had you lived in thriving metropolis that is Montgomery, Alabama, instead of Japan, we would soooo have been friends.

And for the record, the smell of old books is still a favorite :)

I majored in history in part due to Laura Ingalls and Anne of Green Gables! Of course, I did go on to concentrate my studies on Eastern Europe and the Middle East. . .

Little House reruns were on at 10 a.m. in the morning when I was little and every day my mom would tape it for me on VHS and I would watch it on her bed when I got home from school. We also had EVERY episode of Punky on tape. Except for the cartoon version- that little animal friend of hers really creeped me out!? My husband knows that my dream vacatin would be to go to Prince Edward Island and see Green Gables-did you know you can do that??? :) We are absolutely going to do it someday. Maybe I'll see you there. I still watch all of my Anne dvds when I'm stressed and just need to get back to basics. Gilbert was dreamy . . . maybe as dreamy as Kirk Camerson? I would chose Green Gables over the Little House I guess. . . mainly because of "White Way Delight" and "The Lake of Shining Waters" :) Thanks for being so real friend.

I think I remember everyone of those episodes. My mother in law bought my daughter the complete set of Anne of Green Gables and I thought she was crazy...then I saw the shows....I love them and watch them over and over...my fav was when she had the rat in the pudding or when she mets Gilbert on the bridge!!

Angie I was SO "you" growing up! The first time I saw Shirley Temple in The Little Soldier, I had to get a shawl. Like the one she wears when she runs through the streets to go find her father. I wore it with my Larua Ingles dress that my grandmother found at a yard sale for a quarter. It was red material with tiny yellow and white flowers, zipper up the back with white lace on the puff slightly puffed/pleated short sleeves and around the collar. There was a field behind my house where the grass grew tall and I'd run in that field with my dress and shawl on pretending it was better than the slip and slide I never had.

Oh. I love me some Little House! My sister & roomate used to laugh at me in college. It would come on while we were getting ready to go to chapel (private Christian school) in the mornings. We would watch 1 episode and then just barely see the start of another before we had to start walking to chapel. As soon as the music would start for the show (not the intro) I would start saying "this is the one where..." and then tell them about the episode on our walk!!! We did this for 3 years. It took me a while to embrace my love, but I LOVE me some Little House. And I may (or may not have) cried when Michael Landon died in real life. And I may (or may not) have several seasons on DVD. I can only hope to have children who love it as much as I did (do).

I still watch Little House on the Prairie on the Hallmark channel! Oh and when Alf comes on Sunday nights on the WGN, my whole family is all about Alf...LOL!!!
  • Claudia Jara Dalton · 6 months ago
You know what's even funnier??? Little House in Spanish ... "La pequeña casa en la pradera" it used to come every Sunday afternoon and I loved it. I also watch ALF and I had my own stuffed "Alf" ... I was a big fan. :D

I dream of being as pretty as Laura's big sister, I always thought she was gorgeous, her blond hair (every brown hair's dream is to be blond, specially when you grow up in a country where there was hardly anyone blond ... ha ha ha).

You had brought up wonderful memories of my childhood.

    Thank you!!

That post was HILARIOUS! I don't think I've ever seen an episode of Anne of Green Gables but I know where your coming from. I used to say all the time I grew up in the wrong era too. But with me it was the 1920's! The outfits... the hair... everything about that era fascinated me when I was growing up. And it still does! I would be lying if I said I haven't watch the movie "Chicago" at least 5 times in the past couple months.

Thanks for bringing us laughter and memories of our childhood in this post!

P.S- That picture of you looks so much like your little Kate!

Oh my WORD!! In that photo Kate looks just like you but with red hair!!! That is Kate's face!!

And I have secretly wished for a bosom friend my whole life, but alas, it never happened. Sigh.

Kate looks just like you. I know you must know that. I loved this post. I also grew up with these shows and watched them, well except for Little House on the Prarie and I hated that show. But now, my 12-year-old son likes it and now I find myself watching it and loving it. I have often wandered what life would be like living like that, not a care in the world and none of the dangers today's societry brings, but then I also think about where we are medically, how many things they died from during that time, and all the struggles they had that were not depicted on television.

  • Michelle Bentham · 6 months ago
Oh My Goodness! Now this did bring back memories. When I was 16 years old I wanted a cabbage patch doll for Christmas - do you know what I got? A Care Bear. No Kidding, my mom ordered it from the Sears Catalog. I was terribly disappointed. I did get a CPK at a later date, but it was just not the same. I was 16 for heaven's sake.

My son (who is now in heaven) and I used to watch Little House in the daytime when we were supposed to be home-schooling --- I did not home-school because I wanted to be Miss Beadle, but more because he was more the Oleson boy than any of Laura's beaus or bros.

My eldest daughter has a love for literature. She was introduced to Anne of Green Gables in the 3rd grade by Mrs. Brown (her teacher). Mrs. Brown promised her that she would loan Brittany all the Anne movies to watch at home if she would only read all the books. So as Brittany read each book in the series she brought a movie home to watch. She read them all in her third grade year. I'm still quite proud of her. She is now in college studying to be a writer. HMMMM.

Must I say that it was so delightful to discover that PBS regularly airs the Anne of Green Gables and Anne of Avonlea series on the occasional Sunday afternoon here in Texas. Oh The Joy!

I wanted to be either a 50s SAHM like June Cleaver or a Gibson Girl from the turn of the century or so... I wanted to play parlor games and be courted and all that romantic stuff including where a Peach Organza dress with a ruffle and a bustle to a dance while I played coy with the boys. OH I WAS BORN IN THE WRONG ERA as well... But Acts 17:26 suggests to me that I may be wrong about that anywhooooo. Thanks for sharing and Blessings all around.

I knew you were a kindred spirit and I would rather hear this than any "high falutan mumbo jumbo" any day( I jest about that part)

How you can love someone so much that you never have met? It is God that makes us kindred sisters in Christ.

I wore "prairie skirts", I actually in the US dressed up as Laura Ingalls in..........high school! I loved bonnets, boots and puffed sleeves. Anne and Laura were my heros. It does add to my want to homeschool. Did you know about Prairie primer? a total curriculum based on the Little House books. We have been reading Little House this year and I have been dvr'ing all the shows for my kids to watch.

    Your friend, Julie in CA

PS I met my old friend when she stood at the bus stop in Jr high reading a Anne book. I was told she was a nerd and not to be her friend. I learned never to listen to that and we are still friends to this day.
  • Kim · 6 months ago
I, too, had a thing for Laura.

I, too, dressed up as her for Halloween.

I, too, had pencils, paper wads and you name it thrown at me.

Do you think it is a coincidence? Hmmmm....

In all of my years of faithfully watching Little House on the Prairie as a child, I never quite understood why I remember having such an aversion to the episode with the clown. In fact, last week I was talking with a friend and this topic came up and she remembered specifics, while I only remembered the scared feeling the episode gave me. As she recounted what the episode was about, I found my adult self surprised that Little House tackled such a topic.

Apparently, in my little world, I wanted Nellie (and later Nancy) to be as bad as it got.

After reading one of the Little House books, I tried to make the maple candy that Laura made by cooling hot maple syrup in snow from of Aunt Jemima and ice cubes. Didn't work out so well. Pretty much watered-down (butter-flavored) pancake syrup. As a kid, I hated maple syrup anyway, so I don't know why I tried so hard to re-create the candy, but I guess it just sounded so delicious from Laura's perspective.

Oh my goodness.......I cannot stop laughing! This post was FABULOUS!!!! Oh, the memories. And the thing about Todd being freaked out by Laura.......too funny! When my daughter recently married and moved to Missouri, the first place I wanted to visit on my trip to her new home was Mansfield, Missouri. Home of Laura Ingalls Wilder. I knew my daughter thought I'd officially LOST IT when I cried like a baby at the sight of Pa's REAL fiddle in the museum adjoining Laura's REAL home. That fiddle is real. Oh, yes, it is. And I think Laura saved every little thing she ever wrote about in those books. Worth the trip if you are ever in the area.

omg!! i have that exact same cabage patch doll {Jay-Jay}..Apparently there was a mass rush for them before I was born, and so my mom got one for my sister, and another in case she lost it. Well, she didn't and then I came along, and Jay-Jay was my bff. I still have her, and the yellow dress she came with. i have never seen anyone else with her!!!!

Oh my goodness you crack me up! I also loved Laura Ingalls and I own all the series and the boys ( I have three) loved them when we used them for unit studies when homeschooling.. Also not cool is a 12 year old boy who asks his new public school bball buddies, "Do you like Farmer Boy or The Lonng Winter?" Hahahaha! I had to nip that one in the bud! I usually try not to conform but.. there are certain things that just don't help you make friends.. j/k!

My sister and I (although lived in the states) LOVED Little House on the Prairie! We grew up on a farm, and called our dad Pa (and now to the grandbabies, he's Papa). We had cows, and we named them Sam & David (remember the horses)! We just loved that show. And our mom would read us the books at bedtime. I always identified with Laura because she was a bit wild and unconventional for the norm back then.

And I'm going to have to agree with your husband on this one, the ending was always weird to me. It stopped and like Laura's braid went across her eyebrow and made a funny mark on her face for the final freeze frame.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane! Your random posts are my favorite!
  • Trudi · 6 months ago
I'm enjoying your rambles - really funny. I LOVED Laura Ingalls Wilder - but I read the books all through school, so I was usually about the age of Laura when the book was in the classroom library. (That was before the school library...okay, it was in the 60's!) I was older when I discovered Anne of Green Gables - my Mom was from the Canadian Maritimes, so I could so relate to some of the stories. I remember reading a portion out loud to my Mom and the two of us laughing so hard we couldn't continue - I think it was walking through a cemetary where the lady with her described each person - my Mom and I have had similar walks through a cemetary, so we "got" it!! I didn't watch Laura on TV, because I didn't have TV, but also, the books were better to me. I did love Anne videos...and I was able to visit PEI some years back, which was special.

I think Selah is coming to NY in the fall, I'll have to make a note somewhere to ask Todd about his fear of Laura!
  • Tranquility · 6 months ago
Well, that was a fun trip down memory lane!

I not only remember Alf and Small Wonder, but I also now own all four seasons of Punky Brewster on DVD. I'm pretty sure that show is why I decided I wanted to be a foster parent as such a young age. ;) And although I (just between you and me) actually bought them for myself (under the guise of buying them for the kids), we've had several 7-9 year olds in our home who have fallen in love with Punky - they relate to her because they are in similar situations. I didn't plan it, but Punky has proven to be a really fantastic as a conversation starter for some of the more serious topics.

I agree about the simpler life. I was a reader and a HUGE fan of Anne of Green Gables (still am). I can't count how many times I've both watched the movies and read all of the books. If given the opportunity, I would have uprooted my family from the 1980s and dropped us all on Anne's doorstep! I still wish I could - more than ever, in fact.

LOL - that was awesome! I love those types of conversations with my friends - just makes me like you more! I watched the Ingalls, but I was far more in love with the idea of a life like Anne. I have the DVD of Anne of Green Gables and have been desparately searching for Anne of Avonlea on DVD (still have my VHS of it) ... I longed to be like Anne, and there are days when I still do; but I am learning to love where God has placed me in life ... because, let's face it, I have no desire to use an outhouse!

Hey Angie... It's your old friend, Stephanie, again... I told you I was reading your blog!
Reading this post was especially fun for me to read, since I was around during many of your vividly described 6th grade comments.
I totally remember the whole thing about "the Lift"... Looking back, it's hard to believe that a girl named Lisa something and I started that.... since I was so scrawny and underweight., I was the guinea pig to be lifted up. I never knew you thought that was the "cool kids" and that you were banned! And, I also so remember Katie N. too!! I kind of remember you guys were friends for awhile there in 6th grade, and then you and I started our BFF friendship right at the end of that year... which was followed by a summer spent at Kings Island in our coordinated neon-colored ESPRIT tops and shorts...looking sweet! (at least we thought we did)... ha ha ha! Good times.
Well, as much as I'm sure the transition into Cincinnati was awkward (yes, I remember the dress in the yearbook photo), I think you found your place pretty quickly after that. I'm glad that I was a part of your life those years! Glad that I can hear about how you are doing through your blog. :)
    Take care,
    Stephanie

No wonder Japan is just a bit behind in the times compared to the U.S. It's got to be the time it takes for the beta tapes to reach the American's and introduce them to last week or last months episodes of whatever may or may not be popular in the states.
My bro lived in Japan when I was about 10 years old and after he came back a few girls would come stay with us so they could experience the states for themselves. It was always interesting that they were just a little behind the times. They so wanted to be just like the kids in the states. I would have traded places with any one of them.
I also grew up with those shows and wanted to climb into their worlds. Now I would just love to live in a place as beautiful as the places in Anne of Green Gables. I also loved her beloved Matthew and cried my eyes out in the episode where he died.

So.. this post was both was both funny and way too close to home for me. Where has the sweet simplicity gone? I have desired many times to live in a little cabin.. fiddle and all! But, don't we all long for that kind of closeness and community-- maybe even the bit of drama that always ends up okay because everyone pulls together? :-) Thanks Angie... I think I'm going to go pop in Anne of Green Gables now.... It's been too long!

Oh! And if you havn't seen the series "Tales of *Avonlee" *sp You should!!! It was my favorite growing up. It still has all the good characters like Matilda and Rachel and some fun new ones... You would adore it!

I found re-run of Alf on the other day and my 9 year old LOVED IT!!! Especially how he liked to eat cats. She keeps asking me to see if we can find it on again.

I too loved Anne & Laura. I think that we would be bosom friends if we lived close to each other. I guess blogging friends will have to do for now. :)

I must say I completely enjoy the rambling goofy Angie. And I won't tell you that you were cute when you were little, cuz you don't want to hear it, but I will tell you that I also have several pictures of me in braids and holding my Cabbage Patch doll. :)

Thank you for this. I loved small wonder, punky brewster, family ties. We just bought alf on dvd series and my kids are enjoying them too.

LOVE Anne of Green Gables. I wish I lived at Green Gables. *SIGH* My little 4 year old is starting to get into it, too. And you know? Sometimes I'd pretend to be sick so I could stay home from school and watch Little House on the Prairie. Don't feel old because I'm only 24 and I don't feel old yet! So you can't be old either!!!

My mom bought me the first set of Anne of Green Gables videos for Christmas when I was about 9. I was so mad at her later that day when I finished it and had to wait to see Anne of Avonlea. I even made her call the store to make sure they were closed on Christmas day. Of course they were, but the next morning we went and got it and I lived happily ever after.

Hilarious!!! Girl, I completely understand the desire for some English TV! It was hard to find in Brussels as well! I would get so excited when the movies were shown in the "Original Version", which meant ENGLISH!!! Oh, the things we take for granted over here!

We may want until September for my little Nashville visit since you are a little busy right now?? Thoughts?!

Laura Ingalls is my favorite and I would love to live like that as well. Except for maybe the really hard work they all did! My kids love to watch Little House also. I have a dress my Mom made me like Laura's that I wore and just a couple days ago my daughter was trying it on and loving it! Probably a good thing I home school! Todd's story cracks me up. I look forward to reading your home school post. Quite frankly, I look forward to reading any of your posts!

Thanks for sharing! I loved reading this post! And I know it might be a ways away but I want you to know I am very eagerly awaiting your homeschool post! My children are still young, 2 1./2 and 10 months but I think about what I will do in the future as far as school pretty much every day! I would LOVE to hear your thoughts and any wisdom you have gained! I desperately want to protect my children and raise them to love the Lord with all of their hearts. But, I am also overwhelmed by the idea of homeschooling and worry about the things all moms do like "socialization" and giving them the best! Thanks for all that you share!

I humbly admit I live by not only WWJD.....but by WWPD. That is What Would Pa Do? Like...Pa wouldn't get his wisdom teeth removed, so why should I? Or, Pa wouldn't bother with flea medication for his dog, so why should I? It's shameful. But I do it anyway.

I LOVED all the shows you mentioned, well with the exception of Magnum PI, but otherwise, even ALF was on my list of favs.
I so remember the one where Candace Cameron (whose brother I thought I was definitly going to marry) was on the milk carton, but my favorite episode was the one where they all squeezed balloons to try to make their, ahem, bosoms bigger :) I plead the fifth on whether or not I ever tried it.
Secondly, Little House & Anne were all the way at the top of my fav list. I would love to live like that. Definitly in need of a front porch swing and the only fear of life to be someone pulling my pigtails.
Can't wait for your homeschooling post. :)

You got me laughing out loud, especially with the "shortly" means "possibly before Christ returns". I did not watch TV growing up but my mom sent my daughter the entire Little House Series while we were on the mission field. and Anne... we all love that one too. I so enjoy reading your blog.
    I suppose I am a lurker.

I am totally loving you so much right now! I am a huge fan of not only Little House but especially all things ANNE! In fact, if I found out I only had a month to live, the first thing I would do is book a flight to Prince Edward Island! Whenever life is getting me down, I re-read, Anne, watch the movies, bring out "The Hard Winter" and all the other ones! I also am a huge fan of Ramona Quimby books...did you read those?!
  • Angela · 6 months ago
Oh my I am laughing, too funny I tell ya!!!
OMW, I sooooo loved Little House on the Prairie! Still do actually, if I'm flipping channels and it's on I will stop to see which episode it is.
I grew up (and still do) wanting horses, and loved the ones with Bunny, until Pa had to shoot her, I cried so hard, also when she found Tiger dead in the barn. I keep telling DH that we need to get the DVD set! I used to like watching and would laugh EVERY time at the opening scene when they all ran down the hill, and Carrie fell!
My mom made my sister and me Easter dresses one year, probably around 1975/76, and they were long dresses, with bonnets just like on the show, I LOVED that easter dress! I need to get a new scanner so I can copy a bunch of my old pictures to post. Funny stuff!
OH, did you know that Laura Ingalls Wilder also wrote a poetry book about Fairies? I bought a used one from Amazon.com, it's really cute, and the poems are really good!

Thank you and God bless

I LOVE Punky Brewster, we are getting the old episodes on Blockbuster.com!!! Alf too, as crazy as it would seem! I had a Cabbage Patch doll just like yours. I also watched Small Wonder and have "wondered" what ever happened to that show or the kids who acted on it! I love your blog!

I love Laura. I love Anne of Green Gables. We honeymooned on Prince Edward Island.

Today was one of those days and this post gave me an honest smile and a good laugh. You can ramble about Anne and Laura any day. I'm also so glad that Audra is your Diana.

I feel like watching Green Gables right now.

Oh my gosh, the timing of this post is perfect! I just rented the first season of Little House, because I was really tired of all the trash on tv.....the pilot almost had me crying! I can't wait until my daughter is old enough to watch them and til I can read the books to her (she's almost three months, haha!)

My 12 year old daughter, in all other aspects of her life too cool for her own shoes, is in the midst of season 5 of Little House, with no sign of stopping. I think we are all longing for the sense of safety and community that was a part of Walnut Grove! You make a perfect Miss Beadle....I tried homeschooling, but was more Mrs. Olsen during that time than Miss Beadle, so we stopped. :)

I've been reading your blog for just over a year now (can I say I love you without having met you lol :) )
I know everyone says the world is a small place, I guess I just didn't think it was so small. The other day I was looking at a comment a friend of mine made on someone's Facebook picture. It said something like oh the last time I saw Todd it was when we had sleep overs together. It took me a minute to connect the dots but my friend knows your husband, she was in Africa while he was (she was also an MK).

I was nicknamed Laura Ingalls Wilder in fifth and sixth grade because I, too, didn't get the memo that it wasn't cool to wear your hair parted down the middle and braided. Oh, and I had buck teeth and glasses. Tragic I tell ya. Thankfully, I grew out of it and actually was even the college homecoming queen. Not to be boasting at all, (I don't think I've ever told anyone who wasn't in college with me actually), but thankfully I grew out of the awkwardness like you did. I love your writing. . . I was laughing out loud through the whole post with memories. Thanks! :)

Oh, and since I see you are homeschooling, I have some Montessori activities for young kids on one of my blogs, http://momtessori.blogspot.com . I used to be a Montessori teacher for 3-6 year olds before I had kids. There might be something there you could use . . .
  • Paula · 6 months ago
I love it! Rambling Angie is just as great. Laura Ingalls and Anne with an "e" are two of my favorites. I also loved Little Women. In 6th grade I decided to dress up as "Jo" from Little Women for Halloween. Everyone thought I was Scarlett O'Hara --- and that I was a weirdo! I read all eight of the Anne books and have been longing to read them again. Focus on the Family does an Anne of Green Gables Radio Theatre 3 CD set that's pretty good. I just finished listening to it instead of reading the series again.
  • Courtney Blackwell · 6 months ago
I love(d) the smell of books too as a child
  • Deborah · 6 months ago
I also grew up reading, watching and playing "Laura and Mary" with my little sister. I was Mary for Halloween in second grade and would have worn my long prairie dress to school each and every day if my mother had let me. I think she insisted I wear something else at least once or twice a week. And you should see my seventh grade picture--I am quite happy in a floor length Holly Hobby dress that no self-respecting seventh grader would be caught dead in today!

My second daughter is named Laura, in part because I have such fond associations with the name. My girls also enjoy Anne of Green Gables. Did you know that Focus on the Family offers it in an audio book/drama format? We got a set with Anne, The Secret Garden and Little Women and have enjoyed all three. Your twins might enjoy the first two, although Little Women is probably better for an older child (only my eleven year old has listened to that one). My six year old (Laura) will listen to The Secret Garden and Anne of Green Gables over and over. I actually like the book and the movie of Anne better, but she loves the CD.

I also enjoy reading your blog, profound or random!

I love hearing about how you grew up.I think you should write about it more! Also,Littlr House on the Prarie is my favorite of all time.I have seriously watched every episode hundreds of times.I have just about every show memorized.Isn't that pathetic?Yeah,I didn't think so either.I always dressed up like Laura when I was growing up.I remember I also liked to be grown up Laura. My mom had this long denim skirt and I would put that on and put my hair in a bun.I thought I was "all that and a bag of chips".Anyway...I loved this post! It is always so good to hear from you sweet friend! Love~Tasha in Indiana~

Oh, I forgot--have you read the "Betsy-Tacy" series by Maud Hart Lovelace? They are also great stories of growing up in the past which have been much loved by both me and my daughters. The first book in the series is a great early chapter book to read aloud to five and six year olds. The characters are five years old when the series starts and the chapters are not too long to tax a young attention span (or mom's voice). The complexity and length of each chapter increases as the characters grow up in each successive book. The whole series takes them to young adulthood (kind of like the entire Anne series), but the first 2-4 books are appropriate for young readers/listeners.

    I am DYING!!!!!
First of all, I totally LOVED "Small Wonders", except I always felt bad that Vicky had to sleep in the closet, even if she was a robot.
Second, I DO remember that episode of Spunky Brewster!! Do you remember the one where they were playing hide-and-go seek and the child hid in the old refrigerator and got stuck??? Man, they dealt with some serious issues, didn't they?!
Third, I TOTALLY used sticker earrings for years too. Man we were cool.
And lastly, I just adore you Angie, I adore your honesty and humility. I am reading a book called "Mudhouse Sabbath" right now and it's written by a woman who was brought up Jewish and converted to Christianity as an adult - it's a great book that just smells terrific by the way =) - and she talks about several Jewish "traditions' she misses. One of them is hospitality, and she paints with a broad brush what all hospitality really entails...including letting people IN to your LIFE, and really being transparent with them.
You are one of the most hospitable people I know Angie, and you are a wonderful example for me.
    Blessings,
    kendra =)

I haven't thought about Small Wonder in eons... but sometimes I do hear her little voice saying "no no no no no no no no no" (or was it her mother?).
And I love Little House too - Almanzo was my first 'crush'. :) But now I won't be able to watch re-runs and the end credits without thinking of poor possessed Laura! :)

This was such a funny post! I LOVED the Little House On the Prairie - and read all the books. I read all of the Anne of Green Gables books, and wanted to be just like her. I also really wanted that one wonderful "bosom" friends. How funny - you brought back alot of memories for me.

Todd's "fear" of that scene cracked me up - because all though I never thought of it the way he did, I remember what he is talking about!

And yes - you look SO much like Kate!!

Yesterday a life-long friend said, "You HAVE to read Angie Smith's blog today! She posted about herself as a child and she was JUST LIKE YOU!" I was so flattered, and when I did read this post, I discovered that she's right: you could have been describing ME as a girl.

Except, of course, you turned out much cooler as an adult. :)

I can't wait to read about your homeschooling decision and experience--I'm starting this fall with Kindergarten for our oldest.

Oh--and I forgot to mention that my oldest loves Little House on the Prairie, too: we're on our second time through the books together. I can't wait until she's old enough for Anne...

So funny! We are practically the same age--didn't realize that--and I was laughing at all the references you made to the past. Funny to me that although you were in Japan, you still had some of the same loves as U.S. kids. It's funny to me that most people talk about how awkward they felt as kids; if I had know that (or believed all the things my mother said) as a child, I might have felt less, well, AWKWARD! I guess the best I can do is tell it to my children when they feel that way.
  • Jessica · 6 months ago
I was born in the wrong century too--antebellum stuff, victorian stuff--I loved it! I loved American Girl dolls and even my Barbies were Gone With the Wind characters.

Funny thing--after reading this post yesterday, Candace Cameron was in my dream last night. The night before that, MckMama was in my dream. I think I'm reading too many blogs! :0)

oh my goodness, Angie...you just solidified my love and admiration for you. I ADORE Little House. I LOVE Punky Brewster. And Alf & Small Wonder - well, not so much.
I bought my best friend a dust bonnet from Walnut Grove! I also have pictures but I don't know how to share them.
And my Cabbage Patch Kid, Godfrey Mark, could be your doll's twin.

I found out Selah is coming to McBain, MI in October. It's a 2 hour drive but my friend Leah and I are hoping to go (it's a school night, too!) Any chance you'll be there??

oh, I have to add that somehow I can apply an episode of LHOP to any situation that comes along. It's probably very annoying to my friends, but I don't care. :) My favorite episode ever is the one with Nellie & Bunny. I think it's fabulous that Laura pushed her down the hill..."Nellie, your mother wants you!" hehehehheheheheh

Loved the post! I caught up on Anne later in life, but missed Laura growing up in Bangladesh and then no TV when we lived back 'home' in the US. I remember being the weird one out in the US not from acting like Laura or Anne, but from not knowing about Laura or Anne or all the others - really, how well can you do in playing TV tag if the only show you know is Sesame Street from watching that in Japan at your cousins house.... i was 'it' a lot.

It's fun to see how other Third Culture Kids cope/d in your blog and in comments - it is so much fun sharing when we have similar experiences. I have loved your blogs as you write so i/we can relate whether we have similar expereinces or not! Love the picture!

Haha, this post really had me on the floor laughing, hard! I too was in love with Little House, and Anne of Green Gables, but who I desperately wanted to be was Mary Lennox in The Secret Garden (book...this was way before the movie) I related to her, [not the orphan part] but everything else. And The Secret Garden? Magical! I was torn though, because one moment I would be hoping to turn into Mary, and then the next I was pretending I actually WAS PIPPI LONGSTOCKING! Dual Personality Disorder I suppose!

I was terrified of ALF... he was just, well, creepy! I felt like he would reach through the tube and EAT me! ALF and Gremlins... ::shudder::: I am homeschooling my oldest 2 girls, and guess what... THEY LOVE LITTLE HOUSE and ANNE OF GREEN GABLES TOO! (they also love The Secret Garden, and Pippi too but Little House is their passion) There are countless hours spent playing Laura and Mary... we own ALL the seasons on DVD and have seen them all, several times! There are giggles, tears, and anger- gosh that Mrs. Olsen is so nasty! And that Nellie, argh, Nellie! [But boy didn't she have it comin to her when Percy dumped the eggs on her head!] Haha...

All this to say, I loved your post, we have so much in common, and at the same time nothing in common... how is that even possible? There are moments where you take the words out of my mouth, and others, I'm left crying and praying over you and your family...

    Thank you for your blog!

You have just described my childhood. I even have a red and white gingham dress which my grandma made for me the year I turned ten. I still have the dress, the red bonnet and the white apron.

I also suffered the emotional trauma of having been born in the wrong century and being the social outcast struggling to fit in. Yes, I was the brunt of LOTS of mean-spirited practical jokes at school.

No, it was NOT a good idea for me to wear my red bonnet for picture day in the fifth grade in a new school.

Yes, I was a goody girl.

No, my husband is NOT a fan of Laura. "Ingallites", he calls those of us who love her. In a pat-you-on-the-head, "you'll be OK" tone of voice.

I like Anne, too, except being a little older than you, I didn't meet her in video until after I was married. I had read all her books, though. Oh, and I did notice the resemblence in hair color, but that's an envious observation. I love red hair. After birthing ten children, I still pray for the red-headed, curly haired, blue-eyed twin girls I haven't had yet! Red hair runs in my hubby's family, but all we've passed on so far are the blond genes from my family.

Thanks for the walk down memory lane!

Edited to add: Books were/are my life. That's why we started using Sonlight curriculum for home school. I was more at home in the library or the book shop than in the playground.

    LOVED Laura and Anne!!!!
The first day of first grade the bus came to pick me up and there was a girl sitting in a seat who looked identical to Laura Ingalls and I was convinced that she was!! Please remember this is a first graders mind! "Laura" was in my class too! I came home that day and running into the house shouting to my mom that Lauran Ingalls was in my class! I truly believed it!! Turns out me and "Laura" who is really Amy went all 12 years together through school and now 15 years out of high school she teaches three of my kids piano!!! Great memories!
All through high school on days we did not have classes we would always pop in the video for Anne of Green Gables! Me and the girls would always dream of our "Gilbert"! Now we are all married and we have found out "Gilberts"!
I homeschool too and my oldest daughter dressed up as Lauran Ingalls three years ago! I still sometimes catch myself daydreaming and remembering my days of imagination playing "Little House" I wish that for my children too!
  • Stephanie · 6 months ago
Oh my goodness, Angie. You crack me up. Although I'm a little bit younger and couldn't get the Alf comments, I LOVED Little House to the point where I'd stay inside for two hours in the summer and not play with the neighbor kids because it was on.
And, my best friend and I were obsessed with Anne of Green Gables. We were even worse though- we actually called each other "bosom buddies". In 6th grade. No joke, I still have all our letters that we would send each other, and on each one is "Bosom Buddy, 2340 Whatever Street....."you get the point=) Now that I look back, I'm horrified, but I'm pretty sure that when my bosom buddy got married she even put it in her description of me in her wedding program.=) Hope everything is going well in your family!

I just wanted to say that I love all the sides of Angie you share with us, but this '"not so well-written" Angie ' you mention, well I think she might be my favorite. Why? Because this is real, it is like me, like all the rest of us- sometimes happy, sometimes not; sometimes "got it together" and sometimes, not so much. This Angie shows us the silly, fun, and normal side of her that is your real life- the good and the bad. You will NEVER know how much that helps on a not-so-hot day.

Thanks for the laugh, thanks for the walk down memory lane and for sharing your memories and your fun. Thanks for being real.

You know what else, Angie? You never are "not well written"- this stuff is awesome too, even if you think it's less.

With lots of love in Him,
    Rebekah :)

I have that same cabbage patch doll from when I was a little girl!! My 2 1/2 year old son has it in his room right now and he calls her baby girl. I wasn't into the tv series Little House but I really enjoyed the books and still have my set from when I was a little girl. I LOVED (still do) Anne of Green Gables, though. I think we grew up in the same era because many of the things you share about childhood/teenage years are similar to mine. Thanks for taking me down memory lane!

Oh, no, Angie. You are *wrong*. A love of the smell of books could NEVER be considered unhealthy.

Anne and Laura were two of my favorites too. I think it's 'cause I could relate to their impulsivity. I can so see myself smashing that slate over Gilbert's head when he calls Anne "Carrots". Oops.

And here in Brazil, we have lots of current American TV, but my kids love their Little House dvds. Timeless.
  • Lindsey · 6 months ago
oh i love your humor! and even though i did not get to experience any of them with the hope of the green bilingual button, i was also a huge fan of anne of green gables, punky brewster, and little house on the prairie (and alf, for that matter). i too am a fellow redhead...so maybe a love for all of those comes with the hair color :)
  • Amanda · 6 months ago
Oh Angie, you just described me as a child. I too was obsessed with Anne and Laura. Do you remember how Laura used to pinch her cheeks for a little natural blush? I thought it was so cool....until I wound up with BRUISES on my cheeks from doing it too much. It looked great with my bangs that were so thick they were almost mullet like. LOL.

And loving the smell of books is not unhealthy. It's smart. :)

I am at a loss for words othe than to say if i divulged my true Little House obsession and why it exists we may never stop talking. I LOVED Little house and for many of your reasons but many of my own. They were a family that loved God and one another at the end of the day. "Pa" was a hard worker and I had a major crush.I even used to write him letters. I hated it when he died so young. The world would be a better place if we all acted as though w were living in Walnut Grove!!

LOved this post. (but i love them all). Life doesn't get much better than Little House and Anne of Green Gables. Thanks for making me smile and remember a few things myself.

You are cracking me up with the memories! I used to hold my teeth out over my bottom lip when I was 6 or 7 years old - to look like Laura! With the gap I had in front then, it didn't take much. Then I would braid my hair and there I was!! I so often think I was born in the wrong era - but, I know that God knows what He is doing! :) Anne and Laura are my favorites -- and just so you know, my reasons for homeschooling were much the same as yours -- and 12 years later, I am still laughing and watching Anne and Laura with my daughters - one is 15!!! It is a glorious lifestyle -- you will never regret it!!

I didn't discover Anne of Green Gables until I was 18. It didn't matter, I was completely hooked. Now, at almost 31, they are still my go to movies for the times when things just aren't going my way. My own personal escape.

oh my word, i'm dying here!
reading this post is like reliving my childhood! ha ha ha!
i can't believe you can remember specific episodes of these shows.
candace cameron as the runaway on punky. totally remember it! i love it!
and small wonder? seriously? that was a strange show.
wasn't her name vicki or something like that?

thanks for the memories... i'm sure we could have been nerds together back in the 80's! ;)

Angie, I've been reading your blog for quite some time now but never commented before. I just HAD to log on and comment on your Laura Ingalls post because you just brought back so many memories of my girlhood. I loved that show. My friends and I would all play "Little House" and I always insisted that I had "dibs" on playing Laura. :::geek::: Thanks for the memories!

I am so looking forward to reading about what led you to homeschool your girls. I've been homeschooling my twins for a little over four years now and it's been an amazing gift for our family. I've just started a blog about our homeschool journey and I would be SO humbled if you would check it out sometime. It's at www.hsdiva.com. I have to tell you that your blog was the first one I ever read and you have been a great inspiration for me as I embark on my own blog journey.

    All the best!

...thanks for the trip down memory lane. I too loved Anne and Laura!

Love the refreshing post. I stop by every once in a while and am always blessed by your deep thoughts and your ramblings. I got a kick out of this post because like you, I would love to live the simple life. As I spend a few days in the small CA town I grew up in, I can't help but want to move back and at the same time I'm so thankful for living in rural NE Iowa where I can live like Jesus a little more easily.
As I prepare to head to a family wedding tonight, your comments about the good ol days made me laugh. I was accepted by most everyone but didn't come from the right family (meaning wealthy) and each time I come home I try to make sure I'm wearing my cutest outfits, have my eyebrows tweezed just right, and have my wedding ring polished. Why are we like that? Why am I like that? Why do we choose the picture that we look best in and hide the rest? My husband reminds me that he loves me for me. And more important than that, God loves me for me too whether I look cute or not. Thanks for being you - lovely bangs and all!

Love, love, love those shows! I remember the Punky Brewster episode too! Well, not Candace Cameron, but the scene when PB sees the girl's face on the carton. Little House was the BEST, as was Family Ties. They don't make good sitcoms like they used to..
  • Kaira · 6 months ago
Oh, Angie, how I really do love you.

Those episodes are from Season 2 (I think) and we just finished watching them. I watch LHOTP more than anything else. Even worse, I've gotten my boys hooked on it - my 12 year old even bugs me to stop working and watch it with him. And, for those of you who might want to label him in a not so masculine way, that's not the case. He just really enjoys the show - my boys are all boy. Oh, I love, love, love LHOTP. I used to have a thing for Nellie's hair and one time at summer camp I convinced everyone to call me Nellie. For the whole 2 weeks I had everyone calling me Nellie. She's a nasty, brat of a girl but I really loved those curls. Anyhow, I love Laura and the gang and I think your picture is super cute. I really do. I was a goofy kid too, I suspect. Oh, and I LOVED rainbow brite and Punky Brewster - deep, colorful love for those girls.

Gotta go get some sleep now...

    p.s. Todd, that wasn't nice.

Angie, you are so very precious to me. Reading your blog lifts me to a place of belonging, as a sis in christ.

I love Dave Crowder band, it piped in right now as I was typing... it beings me to tears every time!

My question to you is this... what curriculum do you use? I started homeschooling last year, this was not something I felt called to, but my children were literally crying out for it, so i began the journey with an 8th grader and a kindergardener who actually completed first grade this year. We used the missouri virtual intruction program, but i want to customize a bit more. Especially for the boy going into second grade at barely 6 years old. The 9th grader too. There is so much out there to pick from, what do you suggest, use, love to teach??!!

I don't think there is a Little House episode I haven't seen. It runs deep in my blood too. I also wanted to name our 4th child Rilla b/c of Anne's last daughter (I still read the entire Anne series every couple years), but we ended up naming her Rose instead. I so enjoy reading your blog and I have deleted many of the other blogs I read b/c I felt like I was using them as a way of escape instead of spending time with my kids or doing other things I needed to be doing. I was obsessing about other people's lives way too much. I've deleted almost all other blogs, but YOURS, I have to keep. I feel encouraged in my faith and you point us to Jesus. I love your writing and I love your funny entries just as much as your "serious" ones. But, your blog encourages me in the daily stuff too, and for that, and your love of Jesus, I am keeping you around. I too am a fellow homeschooler (it's a struggle each year and i often wonder how long i can keep it up), but I too do it b/c I want some simplicity (ha) in this busy world we live in---some kind of "center" for our kids in the midst of all the business. Thanks so much for writing. Keep it up!

I knew there was something special about you when I met you. It is all well and good that we share a faith and all that, but I did not know that you share my obesssion for LHOP.......your coolness factor just went way up in my book. I own all 10 seasons. Call me anytime you want to dress in your prarie dress (I had one of those too....along with a bonnet!) and come over for hours and hours of Laura and Mary and mean old Nellie. I cannot wait for my two year old to be old enough to watch it with me.
the musical is coming in October ......starring Melissa Gilbert herself ;-)

Little House was one of my favorite shows ever! I wanted that life, too. Sadly, I remember every single show you mentioned in this post.
Something else that happened this week that made me feel my age was when we were in southern Indiana and close to running out of gas. We had to find the nearest gas station, which was right out of Andy Griffith---I promise you! As my husband was pumping gas, my son exclaims, "COOL! Check out the way those numbers on the pump are spinning"!
Since when are things from my childhood nostalgic? (sigh)
  • Krista · 6 months ago
I remember watching my dad watch Alf when I was little and I read the Little House books avidly, but didn't get into the TV reruns until after college... however, to make up for it, I was 100% a Green Gables fan. I hope the 6th grade dress you referred to had puffed sleeves! You crack me up, and I love it.

I love this whole post. Totally classic! When I was pregnant with my twins and found out one was a girl, her middle name was supposed to be Ann like mine. When she was born with red hair, it became Ann. . . with an e. :) I heart Little House too.
  • Kristen · 6 months ago
Wow, I am actually lol! That post was hilarious. I could've written it myself. Did you ever finish the Anne of Green Gables series - where we met Anne and Gilbert's children? Loved them too!

Also, Little House is still a personal favorite of mine. That Nelly never quite got the come-uppance I felt she deserved, but she came close. Do you remember the episode with Percival when she was making fun of him being short? One of my top ten tv moments ever:)

I'm sorry I'm acting like I know you and I've never even posted before! I've been reading forever, but never de-lurked. By way of introduction, I'm Kristen, I'm 31 and I live in Indianapolis. I have 6 yo twins (a boy and a girl), and I love this blog. That picture of you could've been me except I had on huge gray-tinted glasses (my parents thought that would help reduce the fluorescent glare of classroom lights) and I'm black.

BTW, that bit about Todd's phobia had me in tears because I know the exact moment he's talking about - priceless! I needed a laugh today:) Thanks so much for your words and for sharing your gift with all of us Sundays!

i have never lauged so hard...i love your blog - you bless so many people!! back to little house & anne of green gables...i too, wished i was born in the 1880's, until i start thinking of all the butchering & cooking i would have to do...

you probably cant possibly read all these comments...i'm #288...good governor!!

ps. my fav is when caroline makes 2 blue dresses for mary & laura instead of for herself...precious! (oh, yeah...the part that freaks todd out with the credits, also has the same effect on my friends hubby...he used the same words to describe..unreal!

That was hilarious, and if it makes you feel better, I was obsessed with LHOTP and Anne of Green Gables too - although I can't say I decked out in those clothes like you did.

You are so funny - I look forward to more not so well-written posts!

You just made my day! I can SO relate! I just had the privilege of going to see the musical, Anne of Green Gables, in Toronto a few weeks ago...it was amazing! My kids loved it! They watch the animated series that is on t.v. (not sure if you get it in the U.S.A., but we do in Canada), and they were thrilled to see the "real" Anne! I'm hoping to go to Prince Edward Island next summer so they can see where it all began!

Thank you for your blog...it inspires me to be the person God created me to be!

Love this post. We are homeschooling today and I could relate to your connection to Lil' House and Anne. The family is watching the TV show every night right now.

Long time reader, first time poster. Not to take your husband's side, but there was a sci-fi series in the mid 90's called Babylon 5, starring Bruce Boxleitner, who is married to Melissa Gilbert. In the series, she plays his wife (they are married in real life) who was presumed killed on a planet that has a nasty creature known as "shadows". In reality she'd "gone to the dark side" to help these nasty creatures, who of course our swarthy, noble Captain (played by Bruce Boxleitner) was trying to combat. Old Laura is on for several episodes, and is not very nice...shall it say it? Nearly demonic...LOL!

I still love the old Little House re-runs. My sister and I used my Holly Hobby cradle for Baby Carrie's bed. We would put the cradle on my big double bed, with my Prayer Patty doll in it as Carrie, wear our best long frilly pajamas, kerchiefs on our heads for bonnets and pretend we were in the wagon going...who knows where? To town? To Kansas? We had the best time!

I loved the TV series, but have to say I enjoyed the books more. I learned to read at the age of 4 because my older sister and Grandma were reading the books together (they'd trade) and talked for hours about the books. I was flat out jealous and taught myself to read as a result.

If it was not for the Anne of Green Gable book series, I don't know if I would have survived some of my schooling. I was in a Christian school, with less than Christian classmates. As a fellow lover of the smell of books, this did not help my social standing. Thankfully, Anne got me through one tough year.

Every spare penny I could manage (and a lot of begging for pennies from parents and grandparents) went to those Scholastic book fairs. My absolute favorite book fair was the year we didn't have to order the books, but the books were already there for the purchasing...not sure how that happened, but I was a very, very happy girl!

After Anne was finished, I moved on to rather dysfunctional family "tween" books about sick parents, eating disorders, kids with cancer...Can you top that?

    hahaha! This was hilarious!!

I was talking to my dear friend, Adrienne, today. I don't get to listen to her show live because I work on Thursdays...but she was telling me about your being a guest yesterday. I need to take some time to listen to it. Adrienne said she was bawling at one point...pretty sure she wasn't the only one!!

My little Griffin died at 20 weeks during premature labor. I remember when he finally made his way out, asking, "is he alive?". He wasn't, not here on Earth anyway. Can't wait to meet that boy.

PS I can totally see why Todd finds her field dance a little demonic. It's a little, um, children of the corn...or something. But still, who doesn't LOVE Little House?!
  • Kelly · 5 months ago
Hee hee hee! My heart leapt when I read those words "Anne of Green Gables". Oh how I loved it and still do of course! My mom and I would rewind the VHS tape and watch the end of the last one with Anne and Gilbert on the bridge, "All I want is YOU." Oh!

And I had some clothes kind of like that too and I grew up in the U.S. :) Kelly

Okay, all I can say is hilarious. First, my family and I watched Alf growing up as did my husband when we were little. We both had an ALF doll so for Christmas this year I tracked down an ALF doll on craigslist and gave it to my husband. It now sits in our living room. Also, WGN channel airs ALF episodes once a week, which we DVR and watch together. I have also introduced ALF to my sisters kids. Next, I still watch Cosby Show and my friends at work pick on me b/c I don't watch reality tv I watch my 80's favorites. Also, I read your blog for the first time several months ago and read most of your blogs. I knew then that you could be my bosom friend but since we never met, I'll just have to settle for fellow blogger. I love Anne of Green Gables and always looked for my Diana and Gilbert and can still remember how it felt when Mathew collapsed in the field. I have often tried to used the word bosom friend but somehow no one gets how important that term is. Finally, I always believed I was born in the wrong era as well. I was meant to live on a prairie and carry a pail with my lunch in it and wear the same pretty blue dress on special occasions. Thanks for your candid and genuine honesty. I can't wait for the Selah cd to come out, I was just asking for it at my Christian book store. Will be in prayer that it will do well and people will most importantly be blessed and come to know Christ more personally as a result. Thanks again.

Hello, Sweet Friend. Now, are we really "friends"? Well, not in the most accurate sense of the word, but seeing as how you consider me your friend when you are writing, I figured you would not mind if I returned the favor. But, I digress. . .I just happened to note in this post that you mentioned (just barely) that you guys have decided to homeschool. YAY! I say that to encourage you, because, if you are like us, you may not get too much encouragement here at the beginning. My beloved and I have two babies, 4 and 2, and we recently decided we would go this route. Surprisingly we have gotten some of the worst criticism from our families! Yikes. Anyway, go for it! God has already confirmed to us in numerous ways that we are choosing correctly for our children. So, love to you and yours. And thank you for your encouraging words and sincerity. You are a blessing to me.

PS - Um . . . I still want to be Laura Ingalls! And I just this summer re-read the entire AGG series and wept! (No, I am not ashamed.) And that also confirmed the desire my family has to adopt . . .but that one is for another day! :o)
  • lauraleighninger · 5 months ago
You have the amazing ability to post something that makes me cry one moment and laugh hysterically the next! We grew up surrounded by Laura and company as my mom had a huge interest in all things Ingalls--not just the show but actually researching the real events of her life. So when she had her first daughter (me), of course she chose the name Laura. Lucky for me, I was even brunette and freckled, and I scissors never touched my hair until the 8th grade. Perfect for those long braids. Mom being a teacher, she loved to go give historical talks on the Little House books. And again, lucky for me, I got to dress up as Laura Ingalls in my braids, bonnet, long gray calico dress, and accompany her with my lunch pail and slate. Are you jealous?

On a much more serious note, thank you once again for your ministry here and that of supporting your husband. Selah's music has been such a blessing to me! I sat tonight with tears streaming down my face as they sang "Unredeemed" here in OH. I know that his travels and ministry come at a price to your family the days you are apart, so thank you. My sister and I spoke to him after the concert to express my thanks in person, and now that I think about it, maybe I freaked him out a little when I said my name was Laura! Good thing I no longer have the long braids!

    God bless you!

Hahaha! That picture is cracking me up. I can laugh because I was such a nerd myself back in the day. LOVED to read and would see how many books I could read during the summer off school.

This was such a walk down memory lane. I loved Punky Brewster and Rainbow Brite.*sigh*

Oh and I didn't realize we were about the same age. I was 9 in 1986, the year of the weird Halloween lol :)

Angie, I do not even know if you will see this comment, but I had to write anyway. I have been catching up on your blog, from the beginning, and have made it this far! I don't even let myself read what the current posts are. ;o) I just had to say...I never thought I would find another human being other than my sister who knows about "Small Wonder". And by the way...she's fantastic, made of plastic! I love this post about Laura and Anne--it speaks to the little girl in my heart. Thank you for sharing your life with everyone!:o)
